Newtown VFW Asks Community's Help in Fixing Mural Errors

It turns out some information on the recently unveiled mural honoring Newtown's veterans isn't 100% accurate.

The mural, which went on display Saturday at Newtown's municipal center, contains a list of Newtown residents who served in conflicts overseas. VFW representatives told Patch Monday some information wasn't received in time or was incorrectly transcribed.

"It has come to our attention from a number of attendees that some information is not displayed correctly on the mural," said VFW spokesperson Walt Dolan in a note published on the group's website. "For example, correct spelling of name, branch of service or missing Veteran name."

VFW representatives say the mural — which took more than a year to complete and contains more than 20,000 letters individually crafted by artist David Merrill — hasn't been sealed to the wall and lacquered yet, so can still be altered. There's no deadline at present, but the VFW is trying to get word out to as many residents as possible in the hopes of having complete, accurate information.

Residents are encouraged to examine the mural to make sure their info is correct. (We've included some photos above for examination.) If you've got a correction or addition for the mural, send it to Newtown's VFW Post 308 at vfwpost308newtown@gmail.com.
