Mural Honors Newtown's Veterans [Video, Photos]

Newtown unveiled a new mural dedicated to the town's veterans in a ceremony today at the Municipal Center Saturday in honor of Veteran's Day.

The ceremony featured statements from First Selectman Pat Llodra, artist David Merrill and Laurie McCollum, who was credited for her hard work in making the mural a reality.

"It was big part of our life for a while," said VFW Post 308 Commander James Rebman. "Laurie was the driving force — she kept us moving. My job was to keep Laurie calm."

Rebman also praised Merrill, who has created patriotic art across Newtown — including the 9/11 tribute on Howard Lasher's property.

"I believed right away it was the right time for me to do this," said Merrill. "This I consider my greatest honor in the town of Newtown."

Rebman presented Merrill and McCollum with tributary coins in honor of their work for veterans. The mural will now be visible in the main hallway of the Municipal Center.
