Council Funds Security Upgrades, Staff Training For Summer Camps

The Legislative Council approved two funding measures Wednesday night totaling just over $45,000 for special counselor training and increased security measures for the town’s summer camps at Dickinson and Treadwell Parks.

The appropriation will be taken from the Sandy Hook Special Revenue Fund from donations marked “undesignated.”

The first funding resolution, for $8,400, covers two floating staff members for the day camp programs ($3,780) and three additional training sessions ($4,600) for all full time staff.

Counselors will be trained on how to “handle children that may be dealing with issues since Dec. 14,” Legislative Council Chairman Jeff Capeci said, as special needs may arise.

The camps will also be staffed by two social workers, whose services will be paid through Newtown Youth and Family Services.

The second resolution allocated $36,676 from the same “undesignated” account of the Sandy Hook Special Revenue Fund for safety improvements to the pool and for a guard during camp hours.

Under the recommendations of Sgt. Aaron Bhamonde and Fire Marshal Bill Halstead, the town will contract for a guard at the entrance to each park during the day at a combined cost of $7,596.

The remainder of the appropriation ($29,080) will be put toward improvements to the main gate to the pool and creating a secondary exit point in the rear in case of emergencies.
