'Rest In Peace, Baro': Beloved Newtown K9 Passes Away

For eight years, he served Newtown well as a distinguished K9 member of the Newtown Police Department. On Tuesday night, he passed away at Newtown Veterinary Services, surrounded by the Newtown officers who served alongside him.

Baro -- a German Shepherd who came to the department as a puppy from the Czech Republic -- is gone, but he will never be forgotten.

"Baro was a dedicated member of the Department and beloved by everyone," said town officials in an announcement. "He so enjoyed being in the station with the officers and knew where his treats were kept. He would push the Chief’s door open and poke his head in. Everyone loved to take a Baro break. Baro was tough on the job and a gentle dog when off duty. His loud bark that would echo through the building will be very much missed."

Baro retired on June 5 due to a heart condition. His longtime partner on the force, Officer Felicia Figol, adopted him and took him home.

Condolences sprung up on social media after Baro's passing Tuesday night at about 5 p.m. Fundraising group Adopt A Sandy Hook/Newtown Cop shared a status from an officer who recalled working with Baro fondly:

"Rest in Peace buddy, we'll meet again and I'm sure you'll greet me with a sleeve in your mouth, ready to play! Love you Baro"

Others offered their sympathies on Facebook:

"We met officer Baro on a trip to Newtown with some cookies after the tragedy last year and it was one of the highlights of our visit. SIP (sleep in paradise), Officer Baro!"

"TY for your service. Time to go to Rainbow Bridge and wait for your handler RIP Baro."

"Please protect our angels in the sky. RIP..."

The Newtown Police Department is in the process of raising funds for a new K9, according to a release from the town. Adopt A Sandy Hook/Newtown Cop founder Linda Antignani, who has collected funds selling t-shirts for Baro, told Facebook the money would be held in a special account and given to Officer Figol. T-Shirts are available on the group's website.http://www.adoptanewtowncop.com/Products.html
