Lisa Romano: The Patch Voter Guide

Party: Democrat
Office: Legislative Council, District 2
Status: Challenger
Pitch: I am running for Legislative Council in Newtown’s 2nd district, where a majority of you cast ballots for me in the state representative race in 2012. Just as you trusted me to represent your interests and steward your tax dollars in Hartford, I hope you will also entrust me with those tasks on the Legislative Council.

As a communications professional and former journalist, I will bring the ability to analyze complex information and ask the right questions. This will enable the Legislative Council to make the best decisions to serve the needs of Newtown residents. In addition, my background covering local boards and commissions as a news reporter, working in the Newtown Schools, and selling residential real estate have given me broad knowledge of many issues that the Council faces. As an elected official, I will be accessible and listen to your needs. I believe we should create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration on the Legislative Council to make common sense decisions.

In a town that is undergoing a recovery from the tragedy of 12/14, I support any reasonable efforts to make our town a more vibrant place to live by addressing the needs of all residents for more places to gather for arts and recreation activities, as well as for economic development in vacant properties and in Fairfield Hills. On The Issues

  • Do you believe Newtown's tax structure needs improvements?
I believe Newtown has a good system for tax relief for seniors, but we should always be looking for improvements. For instance, I do not think that taxes for those residents who rely solely on Social Security for their income should go up by more than their Social Security payments go up.  I think it is more fair to have a system where individual situations are considered, instead of a blanket credit.

  • What is the most important issue facing residents of your district?
I believe the rebuilding of Sandy Hook School is the most important issue, followed closely by economic development and vitality in Sandy Hook Village. My district also includes the area of Church Hill Road around I-84, which could stand some attention for economic development and beautification.
  • What can the town do to attract more business?
I think that rather than relying on efforts to attract businesses from other areas into Newtown, we need to encourage more Newtown residents to start up their own businesses. If a resident wants to start a business, especially one that benefits the community directly, we should find a way to incentivize that.
