The Newtown Historical Society is a group of individuals who share an interest in the history and early culture of Newtown. The society is dedicated to the discovery and preservation of documents, artifacts and historical images that inform of Newtown's evolution to the distinct community it has become today. It is also dedicated to education, that is the dissemination of the information that it collects and archives to the citizens of Newtown and others who share an interest in our town. To do this the society offers frequent programs on various historical subjects, publishes a periodic newsletter, and publishes occasional pamphlets and books on Newtown subjects.

We strive to fulfill our mission in many ways. A primary focus of the society is growing collections of photographs, postcards, genealogies, stories and other materials which document the past of our town, and preserving artifacts relating to the culture of Newtown for the education and enjoyment of current and future residents. Much of our collection is housed in the C.H. Booth Library. From September through May we present regular programs on varied historical subjects as well as sponsor other events such as living history demonstrations and colonial life workshops for children. The Society publishes a number of books on local history. Members are kept abreast of all activities through our newsletter, The Roosters Crow, published five times a year.

The Newtown Historical Society, a nonprofit group, receives no local, state or federal government support. We rely on financial support from individuals, annual fundraisers such as our antique show, house and garden tour, appraisals day, donations, bequests and publication sales to generate the income needed to fund our activities and keep the Matthew Curtiss house in good shape.
