The Newtown United Methodist Church has operated in the community for nearly 200 years. It is part of the ConnecticutMore Central District of the United Methodist Church.</p> <p>The Newtown church offers Sunday worship service and adult Bible study.</p> <p>Adjacent to the church and sharing the same parking lot is the Wesley Learning Center, which offers a non-sectarian curriculum program for 3- and 4-year-old children as well as pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs for 4- and 5-year-olds. Some extended day programs also are available.</p>

This church was the first one established in Newtown in 1714. Originally based in the Newtown Meeting House next toMore the flag pole, the congregation, which as it grew needed more space, moved to its present location at the corner of Castle Hill Road and West Street in 1988.</p> <p>The congregation is a member of the United Church of Christ. A coffee hour is held immediately after every Sunday worship service. Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of every month.</p> <p>The Cornerstone thrift shop operates in the church basement.</p> <p>The Newtown Congregational Preschool, established in 1969, is based at the church but is an independent, nonprofit and non-denominational school that is licensed to teach 3- and 4-year-old students in classes of up to 16 children. Three-year-old students meet twice a week while 4-year-old students meet three times a week. Each class meets for two and a half hours at a time.</p>
