Newtown Middle School

Only seventh and eighth graders are taught at the middle school, which is organized into 10 clusters, five for eachMore grade and each assigned a color: blue, green orange, purple and red.</p> <p>Sixth graders had at one time attended the school but then to ease overcrowding, the town opened Reed Intermediate School in 2003 for fifth and sixth graders across the district.</p> <p>The Newtown Middle School site also once operated as a high school but then the town opened Newtown High School in 1970.</p>

Middle Gate School

An elementary school for students in kindergarten through fourth grade, Middle Gate was first established inMore 1783. The school was later named after a 19th century toll gate house that sat between two other toll gates on the Bridgeport-Newtown turnpike, now known as Route 25.</p> <p>The school colors are red and white, and the mascot is a bald eagle.</p> <p>For the 2010-11 year, Christopher Geissler was named principal of Middle Gate School,  replacing Judith Liestman.</p>

The Little Red School House

The Little Red School House is an historical monument for residents throughout the Fairfield County area. ThisMore establishment was originally built as a one-room school house and is located on the grounds of Middle Gate Elementary School. It is used for historical re-enactments by Newtown students and is open during a variety of events hosted by the Newtown Historical Society.
St. Rose of Lima

St. Rose of Lima Church was founded in 1859 and once served 11 towns in northern Fairfield County. It has daily,More Saturday and Sunday Masses and an extensive religious education program.</p> <p>The church said it has nearly $13 million in total liabilities and net assets by the end of 2009.</p> <p>St. Rose School is a private Catholic school serving students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It was built in 1957, draws students from Newtown, Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Shelton, Monroe, Southbury, Bethlehem, Oxford, Roxbury and Woodbury. In 2009, the school was recognized with a prestigious Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education, recognizing academically superior schools.</p>

Reed Intermediate School

Reed is a school for fifth and sixth graders. It is divided into clusters of about 50 students, with each groupMore taught by a team of two teachers. The principal, Dr. Sharon Epple, supervises the fifth grade, while the assistant principal, Dr. Anthony Salvatore, supervises the sixth grade. The teaching model is intended to foster a level of consistency and clarity, in addition to promoting smaller learning communities.</p> <p>"The school's core values are to be safe, responsible, respectful, productive and healthy. These values are to bring the community together and foster a sense of caring," educators said. The school publishes a core-value matrix that maps out the ways students should behave in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, bus, locker room and restroom.</p> <p>The school is named after John Reed, who served as Newtown's superintendent of schools for 20 years before retiring.</p>
