Fire, Fireworks Explode; Easton Home Burns in Minutes

Firefighters from Newtown, Stepney, Trumbull, Easton, and more fight massive fire on Judd Road.

The sounds of explosives and fireworks rocked the quiet wooded neighborhood of Easton bordering on Monroe on Friday.  A tall pillar of smoke seen for miles away heralded the fire to many, who followed trucks to the corner of North Street and Judd Road. Chief of Police James Candee said the owner’s collection of explosives hampered the ability of the firefighters to approach the house and fight the fire. The owner of the house, Sandy Cooper, 507 Judd Road, Easton, was not known to be at the scene, but police officers said that all family members were safe and not in the house. "It was a beautiful house; huge," said Ted Tallcouch, who was cutting the grass across the street when the Deputy Fire Marshall pulled into the yard, parked, and ran …

It was frigentening, I can't imagine that anyone would have that quantity of explosives in a family neighborhood (or any neighborhood for that matter)! That person was irresponsible, it is a terrible shame that they lost their home, but there is an …   more ›

911 Tapes: Welcome to the Dark Side

Do news organizations that publish 911 call audio help or harm the communities they serve?

The initial shockwave that swept through Connecticut last week after the Ramsey family tragedy changed to disgust following the decision of area news outlets to publish the graphic 911 recording, during which Mrs. Ramsey told the dispatcher that her husband was lying dead “in a pool of blood.” Patch received access to the tape but did not publish a link to it. Did the tape need to be released so soon after Mr. Ramsey’s tragic demise?  And how—if at all—did the tape’s release advance the public’s understanding of this heinous crime…

Might have been nice to know that a possibly sick raccoon was spotted in the neighborhood sooner than 3 weeks later. Guess it is either dead, got well or moved on by now. Even if animals are current on rabies shot the saliva from a sick raccoon could be on a family pet and then transferred to a family member unknowingly. With Newtown Patch being widely read it seems like it would have been an …   more ›
