Armed security like a retired police officer? Depending on the grant requirements we need to consider legacy costs. For example, the grant might say they will pay for xxx number of years and you need to maintain the same staffing level for xxx of more years. Making the final decision before all the information is available would not be prudent. .

As far as the home being a disgrace, I do not know the owners financial situation, state of health or circumstances that lead to the home becoming an alleged eyesore to the neighborhood. As far as abandoned goes I believe the report stated that a Man was questioned by DEEP officials, but not arrested. Was this Man the owner of the abandoned property?

If I were a neighbor, I most certainly would have called if I saw the backdoor smashed in! Nobody has "lived" in that house in years. If someone were living there, then that person was a squatter, and that's clearly illegal.

If we see something like this in a person around us, or someone we have knowledge of (or even suspect needs help!), then SAY something to their family, school/counseling authorities, or the police if all other options have been exhausted.
The parents of the killers in AZ and CO should have gone to the police when they knew something was very wrong with their sons, who refused to get the mental health treatment which was obviously needed.
Also, someone as isolated from human interaction, other than with his mother as AL was, is a grave risk to himself if not others! Imo it is not only his mother who failed to see and act on warning signs.

For ex. , did you know that you can't legally…Read More leave New England with a firearm no matter how you store it (even unloaded, locked in a box, in your trunk) because NY and NJ laws are so onerous? Did you know that they profile and illegally search and seize ("Is there a problem officer?" "All you Vermonters carry guns. Now get out of the vehicle so I can search it.")? (That's an actual conversation of an acquaintance, not something I heard on the internet.) Did you know that even when someone prevents a crime with their legal firearm, they are likely not to report it out of fear of prosecution? For ex., a close family member stopped a car-jacking, but carefully avoided mentioning drawing a weapon because it was a gun-unfriendly town and he knew that w/out proof that it was a gang and not a band of merry gentlemen offering roadside assistance, he could be charged with assault for threatening them.
P.S. It was after facing those 9 giants (later found out they were probably from a known Jamaican gang) that he went from his 6-shooter to a high cap semi-auto.
How about our anti-gun friends give back an inch somewhere (national right to carry would be a fair trade in the eyes of most people I know, including my MSNBC addicted Mother).

I'm sure you've already come to the realization that this Patch website is not a…Read More forum with members focused on being civil, as suggested by SH Dad. Prior to Dec. 14, 2012, it used to be somewhat more civil, dealing with issues such as town budgets, potholes, restoring electrical services after major storms, etc. After the Sandy Hook massacre, the gun control debate has taken over with many local gun owners coming out of the woods to defend their 2nd Amendment rights, which have never been an issue. But we can humor them and let them go on and on. But going forward, they'll have to register their magazines that hold 11+ bullets, or they will be liable for felony charges. Come to think of it, there was one 6 year old child at Sandy Hook Elementary School that had exactly 11 bullets shot into his body. I apologize for the graphic image, but apparently that was not enough bullets for many of these gun owners.
