The Newtown Fund, Inc

Flag as Inappropriate

This organization was created in the early 1950’s by some concerned citizens who felt that there should be an emergency fund for people who needed help and couldn’t get it through the usual channels. It was also created to help other local charitable organizations. The Newtown Fund has provided seed-money over the years for many other Newtown non-profits. It helped the town to hire its first social worker, contributed to the establishment of Newtown Youth Services, the Adventure Center, the Senior Center, Nunnawauk Meadows, and the Family Life Center of Newtown. We now contribute to Kevin’s Community Center on a regular basis. The Newtown Fund receives its funding from donations. The Fund is run by volunteers, and all of the money donated is used to help the needy.

We are available all year long for immediate help. We work with Newtown Social Services. The director submits requests to us for items such as rent, fuel, medical insurance and doctor payments, auto repairs, critical home repairs, and education fees.

During the Holiday season we conduct our only fund-raiser by sending letters to former contributors and relying on publicity in the Newtown Bee, Charter Community Service Channel and The Patch to attract new ones.

We sponsor the Holiday Basket Program at this time. Social Services screens eligible seniors and families who fill out an application which details their wish-list for presents, clothing, bedding, and food. We encourage residents to “adopt” them and it all comes together the Saturday before Christmas at the Sandy Hook School. The adoptors drop off the items they have purchased for the families. People show up later to deliver them to the families. We have a wrapping table for any items that come in. Junior Women are in charge of Tag-a-gift and set up trees all over town for people to take a tag and buy a gift for a child in one of the families. The Fund purchases gift certificates for food, gas and shoes to supplement the baskets.

The Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts show up to wrap and load and unload cars throughout the day. The Fund provides coffee and lunch for the helpers.

We use most of what we collect at this time for the Holiday Basket but we do keep funds in reserve for the rest of the year. There has been a disturbing downward trend in our collections over the past three years. We always seem to have enough people and organizations willing to adopt families for the Holiday Basket program but, sadly, the cash collections have fallen.
