<p>The school was founded in 1989 with the philosophy that education is an artistic process, offering classes from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.</p> <p>The curriculum includes classics, two foreign languages, history, geography, mathematics and sciences, and is taught using an interdisciplinary approach that encourages creativity and experiential learning.</p> <p>According to the school, a "Waldorf education fosters the ability to think with clarity, to feel with compassion and to initiate change with confidence. It recognizes the capacities of every child and aims to awaken and develop these. Through Waldorf education, children embark on a life-long voyage of discovery —of the world and of themselves."</p> <p>The methodology originated with Dr. Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian educator, artist and philosopher, who founded the first Waldorf School in 1919 in Germany for the children of the Waldorf-Astoria tobacco company. Today, the Housatonic Valley school is one of more than 800 Waldorf schools around the world, though it is the only one in Connecticut.</p>
