Sonya Stanczyk, Newtown's 'Everyday Young Hero'

This Newtown High School student is "Feeding the Need" in the community.

Sonya Stanczyk is a "Youth Changing the World" — and she's starting right here in her hometown.

Since the Sandy Hook teenager cooked up the Feeding the Need club at Newtown High School in 2012, Stanczyk and her peers have prepared, packaged, and delivered more than 4,000 meals for local soup kitchens and food banks.

For her efforts, the organization Youth Serving America (YSA) named the Newtown High School student an "Everyday Young Hero."

"With her involvement with her high school’s culinary program, she was able to collaborate with the Connecticut Food Bank (Newtown) and local grocery stores in order to create a food delivery program for homeless shelters and soup kitchens," YSA writes on its website. "In addition, Stanczyk also works with high school health teachers in order to help implement a hunger awareness unit into the curriculum."
