"So, What Kind of Stuff Do You Guys Play?"

This week, an explanation on the different genres I use to label the bands in my live music list.

When I first started this blog, the live music list was a bit simpler. It had the name of a venue, its address, the band that was playing at said venue, and what time they started and stopped. Since that first entry, there have really only been two major changes: 1) I added hyperlinks for all the bands and bars that had websites or social media pages. 2) I defined which genres of music a band or artist played.

To be perfectly honest, I was hesitant to do the latter. So many bands--be they a cover act or an original act--don't like to be defined by, or locked into, one genre. Original acts in particular don't like this, because they feel like it pigeonholes them into a specific sound or otherwise creates expectations that they may not always meet. In addition, there are many bands (cover acts, mostly) that play a very wide range of material spanning multiple genres, so it's difficult to pin them down in any specific way.

That being said, I do understand the need for wanting to see a band's genre in the list. Say, for instance, you have a group of co-workers you want to take out for a night of good country music. So you peruse my list and find a band called, let's just say, "The Urban Cowboy Crew." You think to yourself, "'Cowboy' is right in their name, so they must be country!" So you get to the bar where they're playing, only to discover they're a Sludge Metal band with a Hip-Hop frontman. Not quite what you'd hoped for.

With all this in mind, I thought I'd take the opportunity this week to explain my genre system. I've had several people ask me how I come up with the different genres for bands. Sometimes I use the band's own description of their sound as my way to label the band (as is the case with the band I'm in, Circle Sky, which calls itself Classic, Alternative, and British Rock), but most of the time I listen to the band and just use my best judgment. So, without further ado, here's how I define the most commonly listed different genres.

Acoustic
This is a very general term used if the artist or band plays a lot of music centered around an acoustic guitar. Typically, acoustic musicians will play a very wide range of genres, so it's easier to label them simply "Acoustic" if that's the case. If however, their sound does have a focal point, I will indicate that genre as well ("Acoustic/Classic Rock" or "Acoustic/Country" are examples).

Alt Rock (a.k.a. Alternative Rock)
This is a specialized term that--timeline-wise--falls somewhere in between "Classic Rock" and "Modern Rock." I usually use this term if a band covers artists like R.E.M., Radiohead, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, etc.

Blues
This is pretty straightforward. Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Jonny Lang, etc. Basically anything with a shuffle or 12/8 beat and a I-IV-V progression (it's okay if you don't know what that means; it's all music jargon anyway).

Classic Rock
This is probably the most common one you'll see. It also covers a fairly broad range of music. Most of the cover bands in the area are safely defined as classic rock bands. Think of it as your average hour of music on 107.3 FM; bands like Tom Petty, Boston, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc.

Country
This is also pretty straightforward, but it covers a lot of ground. Anything from Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn to Miranda Lambert and Toby Keith (Red Solo Cup, anyone?).

Dance or Dance Rock
I use these if the band or artist is more focused on playing danceable stuff. I'll use "Dance" if the music is more like Disco or modern R&B, and I'll use "Dance Rock" if they're playing more danceable rock songs. The latter is used in conjunction with Classic Rock and Modern Rock, depending on the era in which the more danceable stuff comes from. Truthfully, this is kind of a tough one to define, as someone is always able to dance to something.

Hard Rock
This is kind of a specialty term, usually used in conjunction with "Classic Rock" and "Modern Rock." Hard rock applies to a range of harder-edged bands like Guns n' Roses, Queensryche, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Seether, Staind, etc. Sometimes, the bands will play cover songs that I would normally define as just classic rock, but they play it with a heavier sound, which would be another reason to give them this label.

Modern Rock
This is usually reserved for bands who play rock music from the mid-to-late 90s into the 2000s. Bands like Shinedown, Creed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Buckcherry, etc. I also tend to lump the Grunge bands of the 90s (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc) into this category, but that's arguably starting to fall into the "Classic Rock" realm now.

Motown
This refers to the actual record label Motown Records, and I use this if a band covers old Motown greats such as The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Jackie Wilson, etc.

Oldies
I usually use this when referring to pop hits of the 50s and 60s. Think along the lines of Bobby Vee, Connie Francis, Bobby Darin, Sam Cooke, Nancy Sinatra, etc.

Reggae and/or Tropical
Reggae refers to a specific kind of music, popularized by the likes of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, etc. Tropical is a broader term referring to a band that uses the sounds of any exotic island music (Hawaiian, Jamaican, etc).

Rock & Roll
I actually use this to refer to a very specific kind of rock music. I only use it if a band is covering or otherwise capturing the feel of bands like Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley & His Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.

Southern Rock
This is another specialty term, used in conjunction with "Classic Rock." Many Florida music fans are familiar with the genre, as two of the first true southern rock bands (Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band) were formed up in Jacksonville. I usually only label a band as a southern rock band if their sound is based heavily on bands like Skynyrd and The Allmans, but also Molly Hatchet, The Marshall Tucker Band, .38 Special, Blackfoot, etc.

Top 40
This is usually used in reference to a band playing whatever music is actually a top 40 hit right now or in recent months. Typically, this will be more pop music oriented.

In addition to these genres, I'll sometimes label a band with very specific subgenres to better hone in on what they really sound like. I do also make it a point to label an act as "Original" if they have a good amount of original material they play at their shows (and especially if it's available for purchase). But keep in mind that none of this is an exact science. At best, these genres are meant to give you a ballpark estimate of a band's/artist's sound. I do hope it helps, though.

So, with this knowledge fresh in your heads, I give you your weekly live music list for December 9th-15th. I'm still waiting to hear back from Miss Vicki's about their live music schedule. As soon as I know anything, you'll see it here. As always, if you have any additions or corrections, feel free to contact me at tcronin82@gmail.com.

Have fun out there!

One correction, one addition: The Monday acoustic show at Venture's Bar & Grill with Mark Shane and Mountain Mike has been moved to Wednesdays. Also, in addition to The Stick Martin Show playing at Shananigan's this coming Wednesday (December 14th), they will also be there this coming Saturday (December 10th).

Two more additions. The Mark Shane/Mountain Mike acoustic duo also plays every Sunday at Fisherman's Shack (14519 Old Dixie Hwy, Hudson) from 4pm-8pm, and every Thursday at a new bar called The Back Room (connected to Alex's Place on 7845 Grand Blvd) from 7pm-11pm.

Any 80's style New Wave bands in the Tampa area that you are aware of?
Tim Cronin December 08, 2011 at 08:59 PM
There are a lot of DJs in the Bay Area that spin a lot of New Wave stuff (especially in Ybor) but as far as live bands are concerned, there really aren't any that I know of.

Great descriptions! But what if your band like mine (and probably yours too since it seems we cover many of the same tunes) plays original music and covers that are Modern Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Southern Rock, Reggae, Dance Rock, Blues, Motown ... Oh, and what about Punk Rock, Hip Hop, and all the other ones I can't remember? Well, there goes classification... Your article, as always, was so well written and interesting, I actually read it all. Unusual.
