Bars/Bands: Some "Do"s and "Don't"s of Online Advertising

This week, I give a few pointers on how best to advertise live music online.

I've been writing this blog for just a little under a year now. In that time, I've observed how the bars and bands in this area handle their online advertising. Some of them excel in this department. Others... well... let's just say there's room for improvement.

Take note, online advertising is the only advertising I will be talking about in this article. Yes, there's print media, radio, television, and actual signs/billboards/posters at the venue in question, and those are all important and viable methods of advertising. But in this age of seemingly limitless social media and people glued to their laptops, tablets, and smartphones, online advertising has become more important than ever. Case in point? Somewhere around 95% of the info on my weekly list comes directly from online sources.

So, with all that in mind, I've compiled a loose list of online advertising "Do"s and "Don't"s.

  • For obvious starters, DO advertise online. Believe it or not, there are still a small handful of bars and bands in this area that have no online presence whatsoever. I've brought up this subject a couple times before ( and ), and it has improved since then, but even still, some bars/bands get themselves a website or Facebook page only to abandon it weeks later.
  • Which brings me to my second subject: DO keep it current. It takes a few minutes out of your day to update information on a website or social media page. Even if it's just a brief gig announcement for that week, it's crucial to keep your patrons/fans up-to-date. This is especially true of any bar or band that keeps an online calendar. I can't tell you how many bands in the area have Reverbnation pages with no dates on their calendar, despite the fact that they do play out regularly.
  • Thinking along those lines: DON'T wait until the day-of to announce a show. Countless bars and bands are guilty of this. This is bad for a number of reasons, the biggest one being that it doesn't allow people any time to plan their weekend accordingly. "The sooner, the better" is a good mantra to follow when it comes to advertising a show.
  • For those who already update frequently and in a timely manner, DO give as much information as possible. Bands, what's the name of the place you're playing? Where is it? Do they have a website/Facebook page/Foursquare page/etc? Does it serve food? Is it a full alcohol venue, or beer & wine only? What time do you start and stop? Can I bring children? Bars, what's the name(s) of the band(s) playing there? What kind of music do they play? What kind of attitude or energy do they bring to your stage? Do they have a website/Facebook page/Reverbnation page/etc? What time do they start and stop? This is the kind of information that needs to appear online. And the more information, the better. Simply saying "I'll be at that new place where 727 used to be," or "Josh's band is playing here tonight" isn't gonna cut it.
  • This brings me to one that's for bars only: If you have live music, DO talk about it. There are a disturbing number of bars that have no problem advertising their drink specials, their food specials, whose birthday party they're gonna have there, or who in their family just got married, but if you try to find any information about their live music, you'll be lucky to get "Live Music Tonight!" out of them. This is just wrong. I'm a firm believer that it's equally important for a bar to advertise their music as it is for a band to advertise the bar.
  • But, keeping that in mind, here's one final tip: DON'T count on the other person to do your advertising for you. What do I mean by this? My wife put it very succinctly: If you're a bar, advertise as if the band isn't going to; if you're a band, advertise as if the bar isn't going to. This way, everyone's bases are covered, and no one can fault the other for not doing their part in trying to get the word out. Yes, redundancies will occur by doing this, but redundancy is (and has always been) how people remember advertisements.

As I've said before in previous posts, online advertising is freer and more accessible than it's ever been, so people need to learn how to start taking full advantage of it. And computer illiteracy just shouldn't be an excuse anymore. In this information age, you're doing yourself a huge disservice by not learning the ins and outs of the world of online advertising.

My hope is that these tips will help guide bars and bands to a better understanding of that world, which in turn will lead to more business and a more vibrant music scene for everyone.

On that note, here's your local live music schedule for May 18th-24th. There are a couple cool events happening this weekend, including Orbit 19 Lounge's 9th anniversary party this Friday. There is also a special benefit concert at Sims Park this Saturday, called "." The concert's proceeds are going to the Center for Independence (a nonprofit that helps people with developmental disabilities). There's an impressive lineup scheduled for it, so take a look under "Rock the Park at the Sims Park Amphitheatre" for more details.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any additions or corrections to my listings at tcronin82@gmail.com. The help is always appreciated.

Have fun out there!

These are great ideas. I'd like to add that Facebook/Reverbnation/MySpace is no substitute for a real website with your own domain. Both bars and bands need this as much as they need each other.

I agree 100%, Zombiedood, for two reasons. 1: Your own domain/website gives a very professional appearance, and it makes locating a band or bar succinct and easy to remember. 2: Not everyone out there likes--or is signed on to--Facebook or other sites like that, and sometimes those sites can tend to get cluttered with ads or widgets that your average fan/patron may not want to deal with.

I love your writing! Your English, spelling, grammar, structure, information, and they way you put it always makes it an interesting read. I agree with just about everything you have said. But, it may be that the bars are afraid to advertise their cover bands because of the vig they have to pay whatever that company is, for having covers played in their venue. Some bars will only let bands with all originals play there for that reason, or so they have told me. In any case, the cover bands should play more rocking originals. I would like to hear some. Any song that I can dance to is good to me.

Excellent article Tim. Hope they learn. I always recommend any business, and this includes bands, to take 2% of their gross receipts and plow it back into advertising and promotion, and to do it religiously. It's just one link in the chain of elements needed for a successful business. And, of course, now there's GoTonight.com to help spread the word. See you out there.
