You Can Beat the Heat in Newtown. Here's How

Some summer tips for keeping cool from town officials.

The heat index is a sweltering 94 degrees outside, with no sign of relief for the rest of the weak. If you need a respite from the cruel sun, town officials have some suggestions for where to go and what to do.

The options, from First Selectman Pat Llodra, Fire Marshal Bill Halstead and the Newtown Health District:

Town officials also suggest taking the chance to get out of the heat by doing your shopping or other errands.

"Our grocery stores are full of healthy choices and air conditioning, as are many of our local businesses," they say.

And they remind residents to check on elderly or frail neighbors to make sure they're weathering the heat. As for pets, make sure to keep an eye on them, make sure they have plenty of water and don't leave them in cars -- even with the windows open.
