Newtown/Oxford Game Raises Hundreds for March of Dimes

Newtown tops Oxford but March of Dimes was the big winner Saturday night.

The Newtown girls soccer team defeated Oxford 6-2 Saturday night at Oxford High School. More important than the score, however, was what happened at and around the game.

Oxford collected $750 for the March of Dimes after holding a fundraiser in honor of Newtown Coach Marc Kenney's family. Kenney and his wife, Kateri, who are both Newtown High School teachers, had two children born premature. Read more about their story here.

All proceeds of sales from team apparel and concessions went toward the March of Dimes Saturday night.

On the field, Sarah Lynch and Dale Shearin had two goals apiece for Newtown. Brenna Kelly and Makenna Cerney also scored for Newtown.

For Oxford, Emily Smith scored with an assist from Makena Hillman, while Meghan Sastram scored on a free kick. Oxford goalkeeper Audrey had six saves.

Oxford is 2-8-2 and plays at Masuk High School in Monroe at 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
