NEWTOWN: Our girls team had a great season this year, ending with an 18-3 record, with 320 goals and 153 assists. Meaghan Brophy, a sophomore, led the team with 69 goals and 23 assists. She was named to First Team All-State and First Team All-SWC. Other All-State players were Cassie Ekstrom, Celeste Chung and Erin Kenning.
Erin had 60 goals and 15 assists this season. She was named 1st team All-SWC and 1st team All State and was an Academic All-American. In addition, she was named 2nd team All-SWC as a member of the Newtown High School Girls Basketball team that won the 2012 Class LL State Championship.
The boys team also had a great season, making it to the semi-finals of the state championship as well. Led by captains Justin Brophy, Will Fletcher, Trey Trudell and Brendan McNamara, they ended the season 15-5, with 220 goals and 119 assists.Justin Brophy led the team in with 50 goals and earned First Team All-SWC and First Team All-State.
He will be attending Mercyhurst University and will be playing lacrosse.Trey Trudell led the team with assists (45) and points (72) and earned First Team All-SWC and Second Team All-State. He will be attending Kenyon and will be laying lacrosse.Will Fletcher anchored the defense and earned First Team All-SWC and Second Team All-State as one of the captains and will be attending VA Tech in the fall.Brendan McNamara led the team with 153 ground balls, earning All-SWC Division 1 and will be attending Queens College and playing lacrosse.
All-American certainly has a nice ring to it and many players from the area were smiling from ear to ear after finding out their names will forever be attached to it. The 2012 Connecticut All-American Girls Lacrosse team was announced recently and the first-team is dominated by a lot of players from the FCIAC.
Heading the list is the dynamic duo from . Sarah Mannelly, the Connecticut Player of the Year, garnered All-American status after another brilliant season for the Rams. As a midfielder, Mannelly scored 83 goals and dished out 47 assists. Teammate , who is the best hockey player in the state, made the team as a junior after pumping in 84 goals during a season that saw New Canaan win the Class M state championship.
Two players from also earned first-team honors. Emily Conway racked up 58 goals and chipped in with 39 assists to secure a place on the team, while teammate Mary Taussig recorded 13 goals to go along with 19 as a defensive midfielder.
Claire Feeney, a senior attack from made the team after scoring 97 goals in helping the Cardinals win the Class L state championship.
Casey Pearsall, a junior who has already verbally committed to Notre Dame, had a spectacular season, scoring 68 goals while dishing out 42 assists for , who lost to New Canaan in the Class M final.
Taylor Hardison, who set a school record with 46 assists for , made first-team All-American along with teammate, Emily Tropas, a defenseman.
Sarah Nesi, a midfielder from who will play at Brown University, also captured first-team honors.
Area players who received Honorable mention All-American include: Jessie Ambrose (Staples), Maria Blois (Cheshire), Alexandra Crofts (Staples), Tori Dunster (Greenwich), Jena Fritts (Darien), Allison Sciaretta (Sacred Heart).
