Girls Soccer Ends Bid for State Title

Trumbull wins, 1-0, in Class LL state semifinal against Newtown Friday.

With less than two minutes remaining in the state Class LL girls soccer semifinal, Trumbull's Lorraine Dedrick dashed Newtown's hopes of advancing to the championship round as she knocked in the game's only goal at Ken Strong stadium in West Haven Thursday night.

"I was actually getting ready for overtime," Newtown Coach Marc Kenney said.

By scoring so late, Trumbull left too little time for the Nighthawks to recover, particularly as both teams appeared to have been evenly matched for most of the game as they jockeyed for possession and shots on goal.

"The difference was Trumbull played together," Kenney said. "We played hard but we didn't play hard collectively."

With the 1-0 win, No. 18 Trumbull (11-3-6) will await the winner of the other semifinal between No. 1 Glastonbury and No. 20 Staples Saturday afternoon. Sixth seeded Newtown ends the season with a 14-2-4 record.

"This is the best group of kids I've worked with in my career," Kenney said of the Nighthawks. "I thought we did a good job until now."
