CIAC: Nighthawks Won't Have To Play On Dec. 14

As Newtown High School's undefeated 12-0 Nighthawks head into the state tournament, Connecticut's top school sports governing body has ruled they won't have to play on Dec. 14 if and when they reach the state championship.

The championships, held at New Britain's Central Connecticut State University, are scheduled for Dec. 13 and 14. But CIAC spokesperson Joel Cookson says the championship game will be held Friday night, rather than Saturday, if the Nighthawks reach that game, according to the Associated Press.

"The football committee did feel that due to the sensitivity surrounding the Newtown events," Cookson said, "If the school reaches the finals it's appropriate not to ask them to play on that anniversary date."

The Nighthawks face Ridgefield 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night at Newtown High School. For more information, see the Newtown High School blog.

Why stay home on 12/14 Newtown Football? Can you imagine how awesome it would be for the town if Newtown Football went 15-0 and won the LL championship ON 12/14 with the entire town in New Britain cheering them on!!! THAT would be worth having the media in town for. What a great story it would be.

I think the football league is showing respect by not playing on 12/14. I thank them for thinking ahead. Paul, the world doesn't revolve around football. Somethings are more important.

Totally disagree Clink. It's not about the game. It's about showing the world a united community that won't allow 12/14 to define it. The game is just the opportunity.

Winning LL on 12/14, with a large Newtown presence at the game, would do more to unite and heal Newtown than a million Newtown Strong bumper stickers.
