Community Corner

On Saturday, Buy Local 'The Newtown Way'

This holiday season, some shoppers will head to big box stores two or three towns over for Black Friday sales. But local shops in Newtown need your support too — and they're part of your community.

Saturday, Nov. 30 is Small Business Saturday, and the Newtown Economic Development Commission is reminding you not to forget the shops in your neighborhood next weekend.

Did you know when people shop at small, independent, locally owned businesses, 68% of what they spend stays right in their
community, supporting local organizations and services?" says Betsy Paynter, Newtown's Economic Development Coordinator. "Small businesses are the heartbeat of communities. The corner store that creates jobs and the locally owned shop’s presence makes a neighborhood your neighborhood."

Founded in 2010, Small Business Saturday offers an alternative to Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the growing trend of Thanksgiving Day shopping. And there's not much you could put under the tree this year you couldn't get at a local business owned by a neighbor you trust.

The Economic Development Commission launched the Newtown Way campaign earlier this year to bring attention to local businesses and services. If you're curious what you can get from Newtown-based businesses, check out the directory on www.newtown.org or the Newtown Patch business directory.
