Scholarships Awarded, New Ones Established

The new scholarship will be geared to a graduating high school senior living in Newtown who is pursuing the study of music as a career whether it be as a solo performer, composer, orchestra player or music teacher.

The Newtown Friends of Music, which in the past 11 years has sent 49 world-renowed artists to Newtown schools as part of its biannual outreach program, recently donated a check for $1,000 to the Newtown Scholarship Association.

The association already has issued $207,000 in need-based scholarships from a variety of sources to 75 students in town this year.

The Newtown Scholarship Association was established as a nonprofit organization in 1937 to promote and advance the education of high school graduates in Newtown by providing financial aid to deserving students.

Applications for next year's scholarships will be available in February through the Newtown Scholarship Association or the guidance office at Newtown High School.

In 1937, a single $50 scholarship was awarded. In its history, the NSA has helped more than 1,000 students achieve a post-secondary education and awarded over $3 million in need based scholarships.

Nearly 70-percent of contributions come from individuals and businesses primarily in Newtown with the remaining from fundraising events and sponsorships.
