Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission Begins Process to Determine Plans for Permanent Memorial

The Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission has begun its outreach process and will be gathering information to determine plans for a permanent memorial to be created in honor of the 26 Sandy Hook victims who lost their lives in the tragedy of 12/14.

The Commission consists of 12 Newtown residents who were appointed by the Town of Newtown Board of Selectmen in 2013. They will be partnering with various nonprofit groups and other organizations to collect information regarding the nature, location and funding of a permanent memorial.

The Commission has created a "Q&A" document so that the public can better understand where they are in the planning and information gathering process. Click here to view the document.

Kyle Lyddy, Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission member, said of the project, "Our goal is to assure the 26 families who want to participate have an opportunity to communicate with our Commission, and they have been given ways to do so anonymously to assure their voices are heard! Those families who want to be involved will be welcome at any time to share their opinion throughout the duration of the process."

He added, "As a Commission we are currently in an information gathering stage in an effort to solicit opinions on the topic of a Permanent Memorial in our community. We're working carefully with a multitude of groups keeping in mind the sensitivity of the topic. Although official dates have not been set for when we will be approaching some of the groups, including the community at large, we hope that those who are interested in sharing an opinion can be patient and follow updates as we progress."
