Reed: 'Carefully Consider' What Your Kids Read About 12/14 Report

In a letter sent to the Newtown school community Wednesday, Dr. John Reed asked parents to be wary of allowing their children to see media coverage of the Dec. 14 police report, expected to be released Monday.

"I've been informed and the media has widely reported that the long awaited report pertaining to the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy will be made public this coming Monday," he wrote in the letter. "I wanted you to have time to think about steps you could choose to take to limit media exposure. I expect this release will be very widely covered in the print media, radio, television and on the internet. Depending upon the age of your child or children, I think it is advisable to carefully consider what you want them to see, hear or read."

Reed also suggested parents take advantage of the mental health and recovery services the district offers, including reaching out to Recovery Coordinator David Jacob directly if necessary.

"I encourage you to communicate directly with your child's school counselor, school psychologist, school social worker, or school administrator if you have any concerns about your child's emotional health in the coming weeks," he said.

Reed also enclosed tips and resources for parents wondering about how to address the anniversary with their kids, prepared by recovery team members Melissa Brymer, Julie Haggard and Jacob. (See the tips as a PDF or print them off by clicking above.)
