Focus Groups, Surveys Will Influence Superintendent Search

When Dr. John Reed stepped into the role of superintendent in May, he knew it would only be a temporary move.

Now the Newtown Board of Education is partnering CABE (the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education)'s Search Services on the hunt for a superintendent to take over when Reed steps down.

"The selection of a superintendent of schools is one of the most important responsibilities of a school board, and the Newtown board encourages everyone to participate as the Board values input," said board members in a statement issued Tuesday.

CABE Senior Consultant Jacqueline Jacoby will facilitate the search and organize focus groups to select a new leader. Jacoby, who has helped multiple towns place superintendents, will be assisted by Dr. George Goens and former National School Boards Association president Dr. Mary Broderick.

First, they'll gather the community's input through a series of focus groups -- not only with school staff, parents and students, but other important community leaders like town officials, clergy, police and business leaders.

That's not all. Later this month, the Newtown Board of Education's website will feature an open survey on their website from mid-September to mid-October for those who can't attend the focus groups.

The site will also feature more information, added regularly to the site, under the "Superintendent Search" tab.
