A Big Win for Newtown High School's Marching Band & Guard

They marched for Newtown, and they marched all the way to victory in Philadelphia.

The Newtown High School Marching Band and Color Guard brought home a host of awards — including Best Music, Best Percussion and Best Guard — at the 2013 Freedom Cup Oct. 12, Principal Charles Dumais announced on the school's blog.

Dumais credits the "great work" of directors Kurt Eckhardt and Chris Carley. In addition to the three top awards, the troupe scored a Class V Open first-place win and trophies for Best Effects, Best Visual, Best Music, Best Percussion and Best Guard.

Winners include:

  • Woodwind Captain Bethany Dubois
  • Drum Major Sasha Nanavaty
  • Alternate Drum Major and Flute Section Leader Elizabeth Charash
  • Drum Major Annemarie LaRussa
  • Brass Captain Steve Anderau
  • Color Guard Captains Paige Thanasoulis, Kelsea Morshuk-Allen and Camryn Gaudett
The Marching Band and Color Guard competed against 19 teams from the Northeast. Next up? They'll host a tag sale at the NHS cafeteria from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. (Seems like a good time to congratulate them on a job well done!)
