Readers' Choice: Best Deli in Newtown

What's your go-to spot for a sandwich -- and what makes it so great?

Whether it's the sandwiches, staff or the scene, there's something so special, so local about a neighborhood deli that you just can't get anywhere else.

It's truly something to be celebrated. So that's exactly what we're doing with this week's Readers' Choice: focusing on Newtown's delis.

We want to know: what’s your favorite deli in town—and why?

Tell your neighbors why it’s so great by posting a rating on Newtown Patch's Places directory — just click on the link to your go-to sandwich shop below — and cast your vote in our poll (just once please!)

The poll part isn't scientific so it's not the sole determinant of a Readers' Choice winner. Our local editor will determine winner based on a point system in which poll results and ratings are considered equally.

See our rules for more information (attached).

Here's your list (don't see your favorite deli here — let us know in the comments and we'll add it!):

Editor's note: this article and poll were updated to remove the delis that are no longer in business.

I believe Newtown Deli and Catering has taken the space where Katherine's Kitchen was and is opening this week as Sandy Hook Deli and Catering.
VERITAS March 26, 2012 at 10:32 am
Main View Deli and Greek Market has also been closed for a while now. The Newtown Patch needs to do better research.......
yoda March 26, 2012 at 10:32 am
The General store is truly the best quality for your money here in Newtown!
Russ March 26, 2012 at 11:26 am
I would assume a vote for Main View or Katherine's Kitchen should be interpreted as a protest vote?
Alex Tytler March 26, 2012 at 11:34 am
Misty Vale. Best bacon egg and cheese on the planet.
Judy Vetare March 26, 2012 at 12:25 pm
I have used The General store for my parties and have never been let down.
I get my coffee there every morning and the customer service is extremely friendly! I enjoy seeing many productive citizens of our community at the General Store!

Thanks for letting us know about the delis that are closed. I've updated the article and poll.
Newtowner March 26, 2012 at 01:01 pm
are we really going to do these best of polls every week? Gary, next time you do a poll you should at least get off your couch and drive by these delis in Newtown to make sure they are still in business. This is just poor fact checking!
Sam Mihailoff March 26, 2012 at 01:26 pm
personally, I like Yoda's Deli, which has been in business in town for some time now...the very friendly atmosphere and marvelous comradery certainly makes up for the green deli meat
***see photo Zagat score has been a solid 10 for years

The general store is by far the best deli in newtown! The flagpole is my favorite sandwich and the workers and owner are nice. Great deal for your $. The store looks and is very professional and I'd recommend to anyone.
Joe Morgan March 27, 2012 at 12:15 am
The general store has the best bacon egg and cheese hands down. I have lived in NY my whole life. This was the best ever....
yoda March 27, 2012 at 01:44 am
Yoda always does business with the best and most respected people in Newtown! Thanks, Newtown General Store for all you do for our community without looking for a profit!
Celeste March 27, 2012 at 11:42 am
Wait just checking Newtown General store is in business but not for a profit??? I have to say it is very irresponsible for the Patch to conduct a poll where you can vote unlimited times, it might actually hurt other businesses in town. Why bother???
Daniel Patti March 27, 2012 at 12:35 pm
I highly doubt a Newtown Patch poll will hurt or help any of these established businesses.
Celeste March 27, 2012 at 12:48 pm
Let's hope not, but again why bother???
Hermann Zwergel March 27, 2012 at 12:48 pm
Agree, (the fact that anyone can vote numerous times makes the poll worse than useless). Why can't the Patch allow one vote per user ID? It's not that complicated.
Sam Mihailoff March 27, 2012 at 01:03 pm
both sad and funny to think that anybody would actually stuff the ballot box on a Patch poll about anything
Yeahh, I'll show 'em..."Slop City Deli", over and over and over again....seriously, would somebody do this???
yoda March 27, 2012 at 05:36 pm
I agree, what hurts or help a business falls on the person who runs it!
sadielee March 27, 2012 at 07:05 pm
Is it me or has this site gone down the tubes since Hoa left? policy reports have not been updated in two weeks, no articles on anything with budget or bus drivers (wasn't that decision like today?)
sadielee March 27, 2012 at 07:05 pm
make that police reports
Sam Mihailoff March 27, 2012 at 07:25 pm
well, the editor...3rd since Hoa left, asked for tips, suggestions, and involvement
I sent six...that's where it stands I sent six I figure, I am not a paid staffer or reporter, so anything more than that on my part is not going to happen. But then again I heard folks who were actually staffers, reporters, and editors, were not getting paid either...perhaps that's why Hoa headed to Joyzey.
Swami March 27, 2012 at 07:34 pm
Click on the Unicycle story, it will make your day.
yoda March 27, 2012 at 08:40 pm

Guys,
The editor of newtown patch is really the editor of milford patch. Hoa quit and Karen who was hoa's boss was put in charge - she got fired/quit and now they put the idiot editor from milford in charge. Stick a fork in Patch because its done!

What if I did the police reports, Sam did BOE reports and Sully did the community reports, Newtowner can do the social events?
Sam Mihailoff March 27, 2012 at 09:12 pm

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
