Health & Fitness

What a year it's been!

It is one year since 28 educators, social workers, therapists and community leaders were trained in "Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way".  I wanted to share reflections of what we've accomplished this year.

We have held 13 Parenting the Positive Discipline Way classes in six towns.  We have also done some training at local preschools and day cares.  We have 11 facilitators teaching classes, and many more volunteering to support the infrastructure and marketing of Positive Discipline.  We have a website, weekly blog, Facebook page with daily postings (https://www.facebook.com/PositiveDisciplineOfWesternCt), twitter, been on basketball referee tee-shirts and soccer club website banner, Macaroni Kids, Patch.com, and have received some great local publicity.  We have donated a full set of Positive Discipline books to the Brookfield, Danbury, New Milford and Newtown libraries.  We also have bi-monthly mentor group meetings, where we have discussions, and practice facilitating together.  We were blessed to have Jane Nelsen was the keynote speaker at Parent Empowerment University (sponsored by Newtown Parent Connection and Brookfield CARES) in Newtown, CT, and had an all time record high turnout.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, governed by an eight member Board of Directors, who meet monthly.  Each Board member brings a unique set of skills, and each chairs a committee.  We have received grants for our initial training, brain, attachment and trauma training, and an upcoming Positive Discipline in the Classroom training in Brookfield (thanks to the Brookfield Education Foundation and Newtown Parent Connection).  We have also received pro bono graphic design and website services, as well as funding for several of our parenting classes through other non-profit organizations (thanks to Mark Eckstein Creative, Housatonic Valley Substance Abuse Coalition, Sandy Hook Promise and the Resiliency Center of Newtown).

My dream.....to have every child feel a sense of belonging and significance, and grow up to be responsible, resourceful, respectful and self-reliant, through Positive Discipline relationships everywhere in their lives.

Thanks to all who have helped make our first year so incredible.
