Who Won the Vice Presidential Debate?

Paul Ryan and Joe Biden debated on Thursday night in Kentucky, and participants in Patch’s statewide live blog in Connecticut offered some pointed observations.

Often acting as surrogates for their running mates, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan squared off on international affairs, taxes and abortion in the only vice presidential debate of the election season.

The candidates found little to agree on, whether it was a military withdrawal from Afghanistan, raising taxes or reforming entitlement programs. As expected, both sides spun the debate performances as victories.

One clear winner appeared to be widely-praised moderator Martha Raddatz, yet she did receive some criticism from conservatives.

Patch ran a statewide live blog that attracted upwards of 40 participants who offered their thoughts on the debate. Here are some of their reactions.

It's a toss-up. Biden: overconfident "I'm the voice of experience." Ryan: far-too-smiley equanimity.

John Flanagan:

Fortunately, or unfortunately, to the benefit of whichever VP candidate is deemed tomorrow, by the talking heads, to have fared worse, the debate is scheduled in the midst of the Yankees/Orioles, A's/Giants baseball playoffs and the Thursday night Steelers/Titans football games.

I was a little underwhelmed by this debate, but...full disclosure, I was a little distracted so it might be better when I rewatch it from the start.

Biden is a mouthpiece, an empty suit.

"Sometimes the words do not come out of your mouth the right way [said by Ryan to Biden]" will be the quote for the 2012 debate.

I love Biden's Passion.

Biden just nailed him on being a hypocrite about that stimulus.

Ryan is calm, cool, and collected. Biden is angry and looks like a fool.

Ryan, the phony also said he RAN a marathon in under 3 hours, when in REALITY-VILLE, it was OVER 4 HOURS. A completely scummy lie, FOR SURE! I ran 15 marathons more than 30 years ago and have NO problem remembering the times.

Anyone still voting for the Teleprompter in Chief-President Big Bird is a fool. Fast and Furious, Benghazi, lying unemployment numbers I could go on forever...

I agree with Rich. Your choice of pictures for Biden and Ryan show a political bias here. In the debate, Biden displayed all the qualities that make him a buffoon. The moderator also showed bias toward Biden interrupting Rep. Ryan far more than she did the VP. Conclusion: Don't trust the liberal media. They're in the tank for Obama.

Rightwing whining is so funny, actually I like the Alfred E. Newman look.

The debates proved we have an Empty suit for President and a Buffoon for VP. A few clear ups about the debate. The WH knew about the attacks within hours. Obama had to rush to Las Vegas for more Campaigning so the attacks were called spontaneous. The Ambassador begged for more security days before and the requests were denied, even though there had been incidents for the past 3 months in the Embassy area. Obama is forcing religious institutions to provide contraceptives and abortions even though it is against their faith. Iran is INDEED 4 years closer to a nuclear, possibly within 4 to 6 months closer. The water downed loophole filled sanctions has some affect but Iran is still going forward with its nuclear program. Ryan is spot on about Medicare. $716 Billion is taken away from Medicare and put into Obamacare. This will hurt Medicare's solvency. The cost of Medicare is staggering. The Death Panel Board of 15 will decide what care will be given to patients. Age and health will be an important factor when deciding treatment and its costs. 20,000 IRS Enforcer Agents will surely add to the already staggering cost of Obamacare. Payments to Doctors will be reduced forcing Doctors to stop taking Medicare patients. The Romney Tax plan according to the Financial Experts WILL work. Romney has a History of Success and has proven himself as Governor he had an 87% Democratic Congress, cut Taxes 19 Times and balancing the Budget. Obama the Manchurian Candidate. We are Bankrupt.

They're also the same people who voted for Malloy. It's very frustrating to see how Clueless some people are. Oh I'm a Democrat and I couldn't possibly vote for Romney. Too bad so many don't know the real Romney, Bright, successful, charitable, Christian and kind to his fellow man. If you want to read a nice article about Romney the Boston Globe Dec. 5, 2002.
