Town Budget Passes, Education Budget Falls Just Short
While Newtown's 2013-14 town budget passed tonight, the school's budget didn't clear the threshold. Legislative Council chair Jeff Capeci says the council will meet next week to discuss the education budget further.
"The reason is unclear, obviously," said Capeci. "We changed it and brought it down, and a lot of people came out."
In the second referendum, the $39 million town budget passed by 246 votes. The $71 education budget failed by 52. Last year, before bifurcation was added to the charter, the budget took five referenda to pass. Thanks to the passage of the town budget, funds will be placed in a contingency fund hoped to provide School Resource Officers for every public school in Newtown.
Voting began at 6 a.m. and was steady throughout the day, according to registrars.
The council will meet tomorrow night, but skip action on the budget, including setting the mill rate, which would have been set at 33.42.
