State Senate Approves Bill to Unionize Care Workers

The bill, which spurred three lawsuits, now awaits Gov. Malloy's signature.

With a 22-14 vote, the state Senate passed a bill on Thursday night that will allow low-paid daycare and home health care workers to join unions, according to the Associated Press. The bill now awaits Gov. Malloy's signature.

Democrats were in favor of the bill because of the low level of income day and health care workers receive compared to others in their industries, while Republicans felt that forming unions would compromise the relationship between the workers and their clients.

Three lawsuits challenging the bill's constitutionality were filed last month and charged that Malloy overstepped his authority when he signed executive orders to allow the workers to unionize. State Rep. Rob Sampson (R-Southington), who was a plaintiff in two of the lawsuits,

"I believe this unionization will result in major changes in both the day care and personal care attendant industries that will hurt small business owners and the most vulnerable members of our society” Sampson said in a press release.

It seems the entire politburo emigrated to Connecticut when the USSR fell. Lucky us.

Why don't the people who want to live this way just move to France or Greece? It's all set up, everybody is in the union, and it doesn't work at all.

Fun-ny!
Politicians and public employee unions. What a racket! And anyone who denies the quid pro quo basis of these relationships is intellectually dishonest. Mr.'s Wolcott, Huntington, Sherman, and Williams should haunt all Connecticut politicians.

sebastian,
Why is it that you feel that any one who opposes Democratic inititiaves, designed for political purposes, was born wealthy? I grew up, the son of an immigrant, who sold ice. People who actually work for a living, unlike you, have ideas on how they think things can be better. IN this case, I have no idea if the heath care workers will be better off with a union, or worse off. The fact that you dont work, maybe leaves you ignorant, but often, unions are more in it for themselves, than their members. The other potential loser in this effort , are those people who are in need of in-home health care , because they cannot afford to stay in a hospital, or nursing home. These already suffering people, will now be required to pay more for the services they need. Im all for people who work hard,to be paid fair wages, but your default position, sebastian, again, is to go after people you think are wealthy, and support the Democrats position. I think you should move to Cuba, and listen to Keith Olberman. (you think this is clever stuff, so I might as well toss that in.....lame--in my opinion, but maybe you will respect it, since it's your style)

less american?
Where does he say that? He is simply saying that --the purse strings are controlled in this state by democrats. they love to get reelected. The cops and firemen are overpaid-as a result of the slimey dems, paying for votes with taxpayer dollars. In Miami, drug enforcement officers make about 60% what they do in Ct. Sully, where do you think it is more dangerous? Im not saying I know--but one thing seems to be clear, the wage earned in ct is not justified or legitimized by any criteria that I can identify. When a New York City cop makes on average less than a stamford ct cop you have to ask why? The answer is the lack of political integrity from our now governor daniel malloy, who simply said "sure Ill get you the raises, you get me the votes!" Not fair...and even though you are a dyed in the wool democrat, at some point, you need to consider what is right and wrong, rather than just support your party.

I suggest they should be paid what the average suburban cops make.
Yes I have proof. Yes they were more my type. Your use of 'idiot, dim wit etc--is awesome. Ive asked you 8 questions over time. You never once answer. See? I answer. is not answering, evidence that you are a considered individual? Who has well thought out ideas? No. You are just a person who says " you have proof!!" Awesome.... I cant ask for a better example of a democrat than you. Democrats are of the opinion, that everyone else has to be responsible. They just point the finger. Responsible republcans are more than happy to 1) work for a living 2) be responsible for their viewpoints. be responsible in general. Thanks sebastian for affirming my view of the poster child for being a liberal. A liberal name calls, yells and screams, but when you ask them "what is the point" they answer "you love Rush Limbaugh@!! You love him." Smart stuff....

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

Norma has been spotted this morning at the intersection of Kenan and Currituck. The red leash isRead More still attached. She was trying to eat a dead squirrel on Currituck. Very skittish, but still in the neighborhood (yay). Please watch for her. My husband and sister-in-law (who first spotted her on Currituck this morning) were unable to get near her. She's in the woods, heading toward Butterfield. Her foster mom is on the scene now. Folks in the neighborhood, please watch for her and call 203-942-4008 if you see her.

Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watching her from her car at the moment, armedRead More with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
