Irene Aid Extends to Food Stamps

Federal assistance coming to the state in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene includes for food assistance.

Low-income residents who had food spoil due to a power outage or flooding as a result of Tropical Storm Irene are eligible for federal aid, according to the state Department of Social Services.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service has approved $13 million in replacement benefits for residents enrolled in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps.

Across the state 208,000 low-income households are enrolled in the program. In Newtown, 247 households are enrolled. Nearby, Naugatuck households number 1,595, Monroe, 168; Oxford, 145; Southbury, 213; Woodbury, 124; Middlebury, 95; Danbury, 3503; Brookfield, 187; and Bethel, 345.

The replacement benefits amounts to about 25-percent of a household's monthly allocation for August, which can translate to a one-time increase from $4 to more than $300 depending on income and household size, state officials said.

The benefits have recently been electronically transmitted to accounts and can only be used to buy federally-approved food items at supermarkets and grocery stores. Only households enrolled in the program at the time the storm hi the state are eligible for the benefits, officials said.

"With enrollment continuing to grow in the current economy, we believe this extra benefit will be especially helpful to thousands of families who lost food and are struggling to make ends meet at the lowest income level," Social Services Commissioner Roderick L. Bremby said in a recently issued press release.

Households also may be eligible for an extra so-called "individual SNAP replacement benefit," if they have had food items spoil that have a value of more than 25-percent of its August SNAP allocation, state officials said. The total amount of replacement benefits cannot exceed what households received in August, state officials said.

Below is information on how to apply from the state social services department.

In order to be eligible, SNAP recipients must report their food loss by calling 2-1-1; or logging in and registering at www.211ct.org. The deadline for making this report of food loss is Sept. 19 at midnight.

Recipients also must fill out and return a SNAP replacement form within 10 days of the date they report the loss. The replacement form will be mailed to people who report food losses by the Sept. 19 deadline, in accordance with federal timeframes.

The Department of Social Services will then compute the amount of individual replacement benefits, and make deposits to eligible households’ electronic benefit transfer accounts.

So the people who earned thier food are out of luck but the food stampers will get more free food. On what level does that make sense?
Alex Tytler September 17, 2011 at 10:37 pm
On the nanny state level. It's called graft. How about no more free stuff for anybody

Sorry guys, or girls( in the case of taxed more), I can't agree with you on this one. I believe those less fortunate ; who by no means of their own, suffered losses as a result of this natural diasater need to be supported by our State, Federal and local Govenment. I am very glad to support those at home in the USA for a change with my tax $.

In honor of the scoutmaster "retirement" of their eight-year, outstanding leader Peter Lubinsky, Troop 270 families donated (and I may have this number wrong) about $1,800 to the FAITH Food Pantry tonight! I know they always need non-perishable food, but Irene wiped out their perishable supply, so in honor of Mr. Lubinsky, the scouts and their parents have done their part!

I do my bit, even though there's quite a vast gap in the coffers between Donald Trump and me. I can see how folks can become jaded however. Some, and I repeat SOME of those collecting assistance know each and every angle and loophole to be enabled. Are, free cell phones, oil, elecricity, sighning all the appropriate forms in September so their kids get government supplied Christmas presents, from the specific lists supplied, replacement of spoiled food-stuffs (???) replaced actually assistance, entitlement or big business on their part.

feel in a disasters like Irene, we should all help each other with no judgement, rich or poor!
Alex Tytler September 18, 2011 at 11:53 am
You bleeding hearts need to wise up. Stand behind somebody with food stamps at the grocery store sometime. The system is frought with abuse.

What system is perfect?
The bottom line is,in time of crises, were all here in this community to help one another, were not here to keep up with the Jones's! Eric be carfuel the dark side is creaping into your soul, fight it!
Mike Kelley September 20, 2011 at 03:47 am
Eric, I do hope that no one in your family or a friend of yours never needs any assistance in time of need.Rest assured that someone will be there to assist. It may be State, Federal or local government, or maybe even your neighbors or friends or a local Charity, but they will be there if needed. I do believe that many need assistance in time of need, even if you do not.

Thank you and your Scouts from a Grey Eagle. I had a Scout come over and help cut up trees for two days, with his Dad and Mom without being asked. Good kid, good parents. Nice to see the tradition continue. Not the first time this young boy has gone above and beyond for many years. Appreciate you being involved.

Such a terrible hardship for you Eric, I assume that only your strong Christian faith gets you thru such trials.

When I called Charter Communications re: reimbursement for the storm outage, I was assured that everyone affected would be receiving "automatic credit" on their next bill...Well, I received the bill and they lied, I just called got the typical monopoly runaround from the nice lady in the Philippines. Mam, when I see the nine days credit, I shall pay my bill...she stated, my service will be cut-off if I do this...OK, that's very logical. DO IT!!!

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

I'm o n Butterfield. No sightings here. Any specifics as to her location?
Carol Chapman June 19, 2013 at 09:23 am
Norma has been spotted this morning at the intersection of Kenan and Currituck. The red leash isRead More still attached. She was trying to eat a dead squirrel on Currituck. Very skittish, but still in the neighborhood (yay). Please watch for her. My husband and sister-in-law (who first spotted her on Currituck this morning) were unable to get near her. She's in the woods, heading toward Butterfield. Her foster mom is on the scene now. Folks in the neighborhood, please watch for her and call 203-942-4008 if you see her.
Carol Chapman June 19, 2013 at 11:20 am
Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watching her from her car at the moment, armedRead More with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
