Informational Meeting Tuesday With State DOT Regarding Relocation of Edmond Road

The following is from the Newtown Economic Development Commission-

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will conduct a Public Informational Meeting on Tuesday, July 22nd in the Legislative Council Chambers at the Newtown Municipal Center on 3 Primrose Street, concerning proposed improvements to be made to the portion of Route 6 that is Church Hill Road, in the area between Commerce Drive and Edmond Road. This work will involve the relocation of Edmond Road.

An informal question and answer session will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a formal design presentation at 7:00 p.m.

The primary purpose of this project is to relocate Edmond Road to a signalized intersection and improve traffic operations along Route 6 from Commerce Road to the I-84 eastbound Exit 10 on/off ramps in the town of Newtown. The proposed project will reduce conflict points and allow for Edmond Road to be controlled by the existing traffic control signal at Commerce Road. The Pizza Palace driveway currently located opposite Commerce Road will be relocated to intersect the realigned Edmond Road approximately 250 feet north of Route 6.

This work is also proposing a minor widening along Route 6 to provide a four lane cross-section consisting of one through lane and one dedicated turn lane in each direction. At its intersection with Commerce and Edmond Road, the eastbound approach of Route 6 will have an exclusive left-turn lane, a through lane, and a through/right-turn lane and the westbound approach will have an exclusive left-turn lane and a through/right-turn lane. An exclusive right-turn lane will also be added to Commerce Road, which will require minor widening and a partial property acquisition. Sidewalk will be added along the southern side of Route 6, east of Commerce Road, to extend the access for pedestrians to the local businesses through the corridor.

These improvements are intended to ease congestion on this section of Rte. 6/Church Hill Road and, ultimately, reduce the number of conflict points (that's DOT-speak for "places where cars crash"). Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2016 based on the continued availability of funding.

Plans of the proposed project will be on display for public review. Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project.

More detailed information is available at the Department's Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, Connecticut, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Anyone wishing to discuss the project may contact Mr. Timothy M. Wilson at (860) 594-3189 or by e-mail at Timothy.Wilson@ct.gov. Plans are also available for review at the Newtown Town Hall.
