Drivers Escape 3-Car Crash Unscathed

Newtown police and firefighters are on scene directing traffic around the crash.

Newtown firefighters had to extricate a man from his vehicle when he was involved in a three-car crash on Route 302 Thursday evening.

The accident took place around 5:30 p.m. on Route 302 near the intersection of Madison Road. It resulted in minor traffic delays during the evening rush hour as Route 302 was brought down to one lane while emergency crews were on scene.

A firefighter said no one appeared to be injured in the crash, though one driver had to be extricated after his vehicle rolled on its side into a front lawn. The firefighter said passersby stopped and were able to tip the vehicle over while the man was still inside — a move that the firefighter said should never be done.

Another driver, a woman who said she lives in Newtown, was standing outside her vehicle with her husband. He was not in the car with her at the time of the accident; he came to the scene to be with her. A third vehicle, which suffered heavy front-end damage, also ended up in a yard — a different one from where the car rolled over.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
