Police Make Arrests at DUI Checkpoint Friday
Police stopped both lanes of traffic to check for intoxicated drivers.
A police checkpoint set up for eight hours Friday night and Saturday morning, reportedly nabbed three drivers charged with Driving Under the Influence, according to records from the Newtown Police Department.
Eight officers and one supervisor stopped cars in both directions on Main Street from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday through Saturday. Those charged with driving under the influence included a 43-year-old Newtown man, a 34-year-old Newtown man and a 69-year-old Brookfield man.
The checkpoint ran as part of a grant-funded series of exercises, 75% of which is paid for by the Federal Highway Safety Program. In past weeks, police have run checkpoints and patrols to catch DUI drivers and drivers chatting on their cell phones. A checkpoint in June led to six arrests for Driving Under the Influence and marijuana possession, among other charges.
