Police To Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint Friday

The latest in a series funded by a federal grant, the checkpoint will stop cover both lanes of traffic.

Police will be making their presence known once again tomorrow in the latest of a series of checkpoints to catch drivers disobeying the rules of the road.

Newtown police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Newtown Friday, July 19, police announced Thursday, stopping motorists headed in both directions and checking for "those motorists who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs."

Police did not specify where the checkpoint would be established.

The checkpoint is paid for by a grant from the Federal Highway Safety program, which covers 75% of operating expenses. Police have run multiple checkpoints in previous weeks under the grant, including a DUI checkpoint in June that netted six arrests and a cell phone patrol that ticketed 28 drivers texting or talking on their phones.
