Police Still Investigating Wasserman Way Crash

Details are becoming clearer, but police are still investigating a crash on Wasserman Way at about 2:11 p.m. Thursday in which an 18-year-old Newtown resident collided with a nearly empty DattCo bus.

Adam Debowski, 18, was driving a Honda Pilot and had just rounded a curve when he hit his brakes and spun out in the wet roadway, according to police reports. The bus driver, Saul Hernandez-Ortiz of Hartford, tried to veer right when he saw Debowski cross the center lane, but the Pilot hit the bus head-on against its front left corner.

Debowski was taken to Danbury Hospital with injuries Newtown Hook and Ladder Chief Ray Corbo described as "not life-threatening."

Both parties were wearing their seatbelts, according to reports. Debowski's legs were pinned under the collapsed dashboard after the crash, according to Corbo, and firefighters spent less than 20 minutes extricating him from the car.

"He's very, very lucky," Corbo told Patch. "The dashboard was on top of his legs. We removed all the doors, the roof and had to displace the dashboard off his legs."

No enforcement action has been taken in the ongoing investigation, police report.
