More than 36 hours after Newtown Police responded to a Berkshire Road residence, some details have begun to emerge about what police are calling a home invasion and possible sexual assault.

But police have not released information about what happened in the home. According to information released by police, the suspect had fled the property by the time officers arrived, but an occupant who had been home at the time told police the suspect had forcibly entered the home.

According to police, the occupant was able to provide a physical description of the suspect, but that information has not been released. And, as of Wednesday afternoon, no information is available on the condition of the presumed victim or the possible motive for the suspect.

The incident took place at about 8:53 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to police, at a two-family home at 31 Berkshire Road. Yellow caution tape was strung around the perimeter of the .29-acre property throughout the day as the Newtown Police Detective Division worked with support from the state’s Major Crime Unit, which processed the scene for forensic evidence.

Vehicle Sought As Investigation Continues

New information received Wednesday afternoon confirmed police were seeking a dark-colored sedan, possibly a four-door. Police said that vehicle was seen speeding away toward I-84. Some early media reports described the vehicle as a silver SUV driven by a short-haired man. Newtown police said these reports were incorrect.

Police remained at the scene throughout Tuesday morning and early afternoon. One neighbor described the incident as “major,” but declined to speak further out of respect for her neighbor.

Lt. Richard Robinson is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Newtown Police at 203-426-5841.
