Newtown Police Warn About Apparent CL&P Phone Scam

If you get a call from someone claiming to be a CL&P collector, they may not be who they seem.

Newtown police say they've heard reports of an apparent phone scam involving someone pretending to be a bill collector from Connecticut Light & Power. In a statement issued Tuesday, they warned the unknown person or persons usually asks for $500, instructing potential victims to buy a Moneypak or Green Dot card and call them back with the card number.

If asked, police say, the caller will not provide a CL&P account number to their victims. Police ask anyone who gets a call from this apparent scammer to call the Newtown Police Department as soon as possible.
