Newtown Firefighters Knock Down Blaze on Shut Road Friday

No injures in two-story fire Friday.

Newtown firefighters knocked down a house fire at 9 Shut Road in approximately 20 minutes, according to Dodgingtown Assistant Fire Chief Steve Murphy, after receiving the call before 2 p.m. Friday.

The family was home and got out safely, he said, and no injuries are being reported. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, Murphy said there were flames coming out of at least one window on the second story. Firefighters ran two hose lines into the house to extinguish the flames.

Several floors and ceilings on the second story and attic had to be ripped apart in order to find and knock down all of the fire, he said, causing significant damage to the interior of the house.

Murphy explained that due to the home's age and balloon frame construction, there were no fire stops separating the floors, allowing the fire to spread through the upper stories.
