'In Sheer Shock' — Newtown Community Seeks News, Updates

People in Newtown are walking around with their phones attached to their heads as they seek updates on the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Parents are calling each other. Ex-husbands are calling. Grandparents are checking in, and friends are calling.

The Sandy Hook shooting reached across the country, and so do the calls. Parents are gathering outside schools, waiting for their children to be released. A brother called from New York City. A sister from Boston.

"It's just too sad. There are rumors flying. It's violence beyond words," said Judy Grabarz, owner of Newtown Florist.

Parents outside St. Rose of Lima School stood outside until they were too cold to stand outside any longer.

"Everybody is looking at the news, every different channel," said Stephanie Maker, one of the parents standing outside St. Rose of Lima School. Maker was waiting for her daughter to be released. "We're comparing what we're hearing."

Maker's daughter is in 7th grade, and Maker wants her home safe. "She has friends at Sandy Hook."

St. Rose was in lockdown, so Maker stood outside and noticed there were no police. She said she

was there in case a shooter showed up, although she didn't know exactly how her being there might help.

"You see this kind of stuff in other towns. You see it here and it puts you in sheer shock," Maker said. "This is a very close community. It's upsetting."

At Caraluzzi's Newtown Market, Chelsea Berg was following the incident on Twitter, and other cashiers were keeping up on their favorite news channels. Customers were asking for updates.

"One guy thought it was a hoax, and then he looked at the other tellers and he saw what they were doing," Berg said.

Bob from Newtown was on an exercise bike in the gym above the Newtown Youth Academy when he saw a breaking news alert on the television about the shooting. He told the spin class instructor to let everyone know, and the gym empied out.

"Everyone started to get on their phones," Bob said. "This is a small community and we care about all the kids and all the schools."

I know people will begin to ask for metal detectors but it's not the answer and it won't happen in rural schools. The grounds have low fences any man could scale and cost would be impossible to absorb, this only works in urban brick and mortar schools with few doorways.. We need security, a couple of parents to walk the grounds would see an outsider enter immediately and call police or remove the individual. Look up Daddy Watch Dogs or contact me.

There are several factors that play into what we as a nation could do. One area is mental health. If necessary, a parent should be able to get a family member help, should be able to if they think there is a threat (a the very least they should be assessed.) Right now, the privacy rights of an adult (18 years) means that you have the right to refuse help. I had a friend who was having mental health issues, I could do nothing. It took the apartment manager calling the police when she could have burned down her apartment building. A second factor is the level of violence in video games. I know from being a parent that, especially males, play these extremely violent games. They get the "M" games because they say they have better graphics. I recently went to a movie about a true story, but the movie was so violent (as realistic as possible) it was overwhelming to me. Our society is raising our youth who are getting 'desensitized' from violence. My 10 year old saw the news and I told him that a bad guy went into an elementary school and teachers and children were killed. He seemed sad but, when I was little (1970s) news like that would be shocking. We, as adults, are in shock but how are our children taking this? Third, I do believe as others do that the teachers are limited to how much they can talk about God. I don't even know what counselors are aloud to say. These are just three areas. I'm sure there is a laundry list of other issues to be addressed.

I need help trying to understand why he killed all those babies and right here at Christmas time. Parents have brought gifts for their chuldren and now they won't be there to open them. Christmas is about love, our Savior Jesus Christ was born, why did this idiot pick now to hurt our babies. My heart goes out to those parents of those babies that were killed and of course the adults too but it's just that this holiday is what kids look forward too. Please PRAY for our country.

To the people who say teachers should not carry guns because it will "scare children" Lets just remember what real terror is. If those teachers were armed when this happened the number of casualties would have droped from 25 to 5 before he got putdown. Still a tragic happening but if a man wants to kill he will find a way. Just ask the 8 children in china that were stabbed to death in school if gun laws prevent murder. Law enforcment carries guns to protect themselfs and others around them, kids for the most part feel safe around a cop. Having a gun presant has a positive feeling of safety not a negative feeling.

@ Greg Melfi: I totally agree with you. Everyone is talking about gun control which I agree with, however the motivation needed for someone to reach for a gun a start killing people comes from either: a mental Illness, lack of parental supervision, and violence in games, tv movies. These kids sometimes wonder how would it feel to kill someone, because the have always seen that as a "cool" thing in the movies, tv show, games, etc., and they end up bringing those fantasies to reality, enabled by their oblivious parents (how can you not know that you kid has a military grade gun in your house?????), and the lack of gun control. Shame. This country should rise up to this crisis, parents should get more involved in their kids lives, and politicians should act on gun control laws.

I would agree that it is "people who kill people''...however, they do it WITH guns!
Teachers carrying loaded guns?...means more children having access to them. Not a good idea! That represents a type of culture that is not what any of us would want. As soon as ''gun control'' is uttered, the NRA types, such as yourself, jump to the conclusion that their hunting rifles are going to be taken away. That is not, nor ever has been, logical or correct. It is the assault-type weapons that have no place in a civilized society. It would seem that the guns owned by the Mother did NOT ''protect the innocents'' in this school. Every one of these horror stories has mixed components as to the why and the how. But we do know that we need more awareness and action with those who have mental issues... Instead of being consumed with ''Constitutional rights'', perhaps we can get Americans to step back from self-interest and take an honest LOOK at this picture we have once again. These families need to know that all America is grieving with them and for them.

Sarah, you wrote:P "today in China a man stabbed 22 children in a school, so the answer is yes, people will still do terrible things even if we take away their guns"
The man in China didn't kill anyonre. You make my point about guns vs. other weapons.
Dianne Foster December 15, 2012 at 05:41 pm
I think we have a long karma of violence as a nation that we must work through. The frustration at joblessness can lead to finding the solution in bringing young men into the best-funded US sector, the military. Meanwhile, weapons meant to maim and kill circulate in our domestic scene, and nobody will dare to re-establish the ban on assault weapons because the same mentality that funds "defense" over everything else also funds these extremist positions on the Second Amendment. The shooting happened in a rural area, true, but it happens to be a wealthy bedroom community for New York City, with lots of influential residents. Perhaps they will take a position against guns and will have the means to make it fly in the Congress.
Dianne Foster December 15, 2012 at 05:45 pm
Clearly, Rick, you are not a Fox viewer. I sampled that station yesterday and found a security expert suggesting that the parents fund private security firms to patrol the public schools. All I could see was a person hoping to exploit the tragedy for personal gain. The elephant in the room is the extreme interpretation of the Second Amendment, those who say we will have tyranny without it. I consider mass murderers tyrants. They operate on a whim, like the worst dictator.
Dianne Foster December 15, 2012 at 05:52 pm
Sorry for those terrible losses, but your solution seems too conservative of the status quo. This shooter wasn't so much mentally ill as mentally disabled, and his mother owned the weapons he accessed. When a disgruntled person can put their hands on a firearm that is intended to kill in a battle-like situation, then one, two or ten security guards may not be enough. Even they have bad days as do teachers. In Britain, an incident like this in 1996 in Dunblane Scotland resulted in Parliament banning all private handguns. In Britain, the police are often unarmed. I don't think Americans would accept that, but you have to admit, we are getting used to massacres here and can easily forget last week's outrage, while under the surface we suffer from real anxiety that anyone in a crowd can suddenly turn on us like a mad dog. I don't think the solution is simple.
Dianne Foster December 15, 2012 at 05:57 pm
I think we tend to say murders when the shooter is normal. In the law, a person can be innocent by reason of insanity, as seems to be the case here. The shooter at Fort Hood was a practicing psychiatrist with a grudge against the US Army due to its engagement in Moslem countries. I think that one may be called "act of terror", in that though it was mass murder too, the motivation was different from most workplace shootings. All these common law notions are getting knocked around. But it is very likely that Adam Lanza would have been considered insane had he survived to be arrested.

Judi, I am shock a woman is making this statement! Are you a mom? we need some sensible gun control especially when it comes to assault weapons. We don't want to take your precious gun away, however, why are these types needed by the average citizen? Why did this woman have three weapons that law enforcement and the military use? You can have your little weapon to protect youself if you want...and if it really does help depending on the situation. I don't know, we all react differently when it comes to an emergency situation, think about it. It looks as if the shooter was denied access to guns but he simply got his mom's...and, again, why these three weapons in a family home? Bring back the assault weapon ban and we all need to get on our representatives about looking at this ban again and doing SOMETHING! I live in Virginia and remember VTech. I've visited that site, it is very emotional. The killer and some of the victims came from my neighborhood. It really does hurt everyone. I extend my condolences to the families and children impacted by this. I often visit Newtown and love your small town..things sure have and will change.. God be with you guys.

Since yesterday when the news broke-I and our entire country move on with very heavy hearts. Children were taken away to sudden and violently. We as a country, parents, americans, non americans, human beings-must reflect and come to terms that yesterday morning, the unthinkable happenned and it's all a cruel and raw reality. I mourn for every child, teacher, faculty member, and even for the mother of this very disturbed young man. Let's for a moment, day, week-forget about the taxes, riches, politics and trivial issues and just be compassionate, charitable, humble and help all those affected by a loss of life-to embrace the less emotionaly fortunate, the less financially fortunate and all the under dogs of our society. Sometimes-just a kind word, a warm embrace, a sweet glance-sometimes just a nod...My heart aches...and for all you sad, in dispair, at a loss, those lost-please do not surrender, please hold on for one more day, another day, another sunrise, another new love, another chance at this life.....Don't ever surrender....

My heartfelt condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the beautiful town of Newtown, CT I am praying for you. God be with you all.
As for how can someone do this to children? This man Adam, literally was unstable emotionally. He didn't feel as the rest of us feel. Unfortunately he was not sent to a halfway house to live with other mentally ill people, it's obvious his mother tried to protect him but in the end he took her life & the lives of innocent people. Sometimes it's better to place someone where they can be cared for properly. I grieve that a woman knowing her son was mentally ill kept so many guns in her home. I am a single parent of a son & would never purchase a gun due to unseen consequences while at work. My heart goes out to all of you in Newtown not only today but each day. I shall keep you in my prayers. EBI JAMALI ( با تشکر از شما بسیار برای چنین ژست اندیشمندانه به سمت خانواده هاt) thank you so very much for your words of condolences to this town from Iran. God bless all of you.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

Norma has been spotted this morning at the intersection of Kenan and Currituck. The red leash isRead More still attached. She was trying to eat a dead squirrel on Currituck. Very skittish, but still in the neighborhood (yay). Please watch for her. My husband and sister-in-law (who first spotted her on Currituck this morning) were unable to get near her. She's in the woods, heading toward Butterfield. Her foster mom is on the scene now. Folks in the neighborhood, please watch for her and call 203-942-4008 if you see her.

Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watching her from her car at the moment, armedRead More with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
