Meet the Newtown Police Department's New K9: St. Michael

Saint Michael, a two-year-old German Shephered, joined the police department Thursday afternoon at a ceremony outside the Municipal Center at airfield Hills. After being sworn in, Saint Michael joined K9 officer Felicia Figol, who will be his trainer and partner.

"I named him Saint Michael because I think we deserve to have a protector of cops and soldiers," Figol said.

His purchase and training was funded through $14,250 in donations and grants from the American Kennel Club and nearby member clubs Trap Falls Kennel Club, Newtown Kennel Club, Farmington Kennel Club and donations from residents.

Saint Michael's swearing in followed an emotional tribute to Baro, the Newtown Police K9 who passed away earlier this year. Stay connected to Patch for coverage of the department's goodbye to Baro.
