Mary Sherlach, School Shooting Victim, Looked Ahead to Next Stage of Life

Sherlach was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the site of a deadly shooting rampage on Friday.

Mary Sherlach had looked forward to spending more time on Owasco Lake during her retirement.

She and her husband, Bill, owned a cabin along the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

Mary Sherlach was one year away from retirement.

But on Friday morning, her life ended in the second most deadly school shooting in American history.

Sherlach, 56, was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where a gunman opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, according to reports. He died in the rampage at the school, bringing the death toll to 28.

Sherlach, who lived in Trumbull, had worked at the school for more than 20 years, said her son in law, Eric Schwartz, a freelance writer who covers high-school sports for Patch in South Jersey.

Schwartz said by telephone Friday night that he and his wife, Maura, first learned of the shootings Friday morning after receiving a panicked phone call from Maura's sister, Katie.

"She was saying 'turn on the news, turn on the news,' " Eric Schwartz recalled.

At first, the couple was hopeful when a report indicated that only one person at the school had been shot, in the foot. But the news quickly turned grim.

Broadcast reports confirmed that the school's principal and psychologist had been killed in the shootings.

"It was a really helpless feeling," recalled Eric Schwartz, 27. "For about an hour, you try to say, 'they got it wrong, they got it wrong.' "

Eric and Maura Schwartz immediately drove to Connecticut from their home in Deptford, N.J.

"I still don't think anyone's fully grasped it," Eric Schwartz said from the Sherlach family's home on Friday night. "It still doesnt' feel real. It's hard to wrap your head around it."

The family was still waiting for more details about the shooting that took Mary Sherlach's life, he said.

'She wanted to help'

Mary Sherlach enjoyed her work at Sandy Hook, especially when she could get through to a struggling student.

"She wanted to help kids get over their problems and go on to be successful," Eric Schwartz said.

Mary Sherlach was an avid Miami Dolphins fan, and she could easily get riled up during a game, especially when her team wasn't performing well, her son-in-law recalled. He took good-natured ribbing from her for being a Buffalo Bills fan.

"She was very sharp and she had a very nice sense of humor," Eric Schwartz said. "She was opiononated, but in a good way."

Now, Eric Schwartz said, Mary Sherlach's family is left to ponder all the what-ifs.

"It’s not fair that she never gets to hold a grandchild.

She went from getting up and going to work like any other day, to ... gone."

It is amazing that people can be so gracious after suffering such a devastating loss. There is little doubt Mary would be proud of her family's ability to respectfully pay tribute to her with these kind words.

My heart is broken for the families of the victims of the school shooting. God give them the strength to get through this . But how many more shootings have to take place before our government takes action against these weapons.?

I just found out that Mary was a victim. We went to elementary school together (about 1st to 3rd grade, before she transferred) and I have fond memories of her. My deepest sympathy to her family, friends, coworkers and students at their heartbreaking losses. My hometown, Binghamton, was also the scene of a mass shooting (April 3, 2009). After the tragedy, this community came together in a tight bond, and I know that's already happening in Newtown. May God bless you all; may Mary and the other victims rest in peace. XO

So sorry for your loss, as well as the other families who have so much to deal with at this time of unreal disbelief & reality left to cope with & ponder why. May God place some peace into all of your hearts to help you through this tragedy.

Eric,
I'm so terribly sorry for your family's loss. I'm a former Patch employee from the NY office, now living in Los Angeles, looking at my father's town, he owns the property running across the street from the school & fire station and Ice Cream Heaven in Sandy Hook. Everytime you hear this happened in Sandy Hook, you think it cannot be the same town where I played as a child, the Olympics torch ran through, where we played pooh sticks on the foot bridge over the brook. Yet my sister told me play by play of what was happening as she watched through her kitchen window while I sat in traffic on the 405 Fwy yesterday morning. I just couldn't believe our sleepy town was the one experiencing this horror. Your Mother In Law will forever be remembered as a hero in a town where people remember their neighbors, contributiors to the town, she made our town special if not the most specialin New England. As someone who feels like a close colleague to you today, although we have never met, this tragedy has connected us and I hope will aid in our efforts to share her story and move towards a safer tomorrow for our children in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Sandy Hook, or wherever are. God Bless. Christine

"If we found anyone that was in the woods cutting wood, they were going to be, they would be detained pending the investigation. So there were no other arrests that were associated with this investigation that occurred." Lt. J. Paul Vance, Media Relations Commander, Connecticut State Police
What about this arrest detailed by a witness at the scene (see link below)? Who is he? What is his occupation? Why was he at the school? What did he say while detained? Who issued his "get-out-of-jail-free" card? Why is the media ignoring it? http://bit.ly/W9rNyE Families of the deceased, you are the only ones with the voice and the standing to ask the question. Ask it on live TV so you cannot be edited out. The 20 year old autistic kid didn't kill 26 people in two minutes. Demand that they find out who did.

My family lived in Sandy Hook for seven years, from 1987 through 1995. My son had issues in second grade, and Mary tested him for learning disabilities. I am so sorry for your loss, after these many years I still remember her as being such a kind and generous person.

As a school psychologist who retired at age 55 after thirty years of service, I have a feeling that Mary would not have been able to stay away from her calling, her mission in life, for long. I was asked back after three years and could not have been happier. By all description, Mary had that special gift in relating to her students, parents, and school staff that would not have disappeared upon her retirement. She would have been back in some measure to keep giving to those for whom she cared. The fact that her final act of love in attempting to protect her students will prevent her from continuing to give is a sad loss for everyone in Newtown. Although tragically too short, Mary's life was well-lived.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
