Federal Investigation Targets East Windsor Gun Shop

The store reportedly sold a gun to Nancy Lanza that may have been used by her son, Adam Lanza, in the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook School.

NEWTOWN, CT -- Riverview Sales in East Windsor, a gun store that has been at the center of several recent, highly controversial incidents over the past several years, is under investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

ATF Agent Debora Seifert confirmed that the store located at 4 Prospect Hill in East Windsor is subject to "an ongoing investigation" and was the target of a federal "enforcement activity" late Thursday afternoon.

Seifert said that she could not “speak to any of the particulars” of the investigation

On Thursday, East Windsor police confirmed that the store had sold a gun to Nancy Lanza, the mother of Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who police said is responsible for the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook School. Adam Lanza killed his mother in their Sandy Hook home before he shot his way into the school and killed 20 students and six adults, state police said.

In a statement reported by the Associated Press, Riverview Sales owner David LaGuerica said that he was “appalled” that Nancy Lanza purchased a gun that may have been used in the tragedy.

“There is nothing more devastating than the loss of a child,” LaGuercia told the AP. “We are absolutely appalled that the product that we sold several years ago would be used in this type of horrendous crime. Our hearts go out to the victims and the families.”

“We are cooperating with law enforcement and their efforts to get to the bottom of this senseless tragedy,” LaGuercia said, according to the AP.

The gun shop has had a history of issues, particularly with being unable to track its inventory.

On Dec. 15, a South Windsor man was arrested after he attempted to steal a long rifle from Riverview Sales.

Jordan Marsh, 26, was charged with third-degree larceny, first-degree robbery, theft of a firearm and carrying of dangerous weapons. He was arraigned in Enfield on Monday and held on $2 million bail.

Further investigation revealed that Marsh had an AR-15 assault rifle stashed at a Hartford hotel where he had been staying, police said.

According to East Windsor Det. Matthew Carl, the AR-15 had been stolen from Riverview Sales, whose employees were unaware that the weapon was missing.

It was not the first time that Marsh had taken guns from Riverview Sales.

Marsh, who, according to relatives, is mentally ill, had previously received a two-year suspended sentence after it was discovered in June 2011 that he had stolen 12 firearms from Riverview Sales.

Store employees were not aware that Marsh had taken 12 guns from the store in the first incident until they were alerted in June 2011.

Marsh isn’t the only person who has stolen a large number of guns from Riverview Sales, according to police.

In 2007, Riverview Sales owner David E. LaGuercia notified the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives that 33 guns were missing from his store, according to the Hartford Courant. Of those 33 guns, 28 were recovered when police searched the home of Brian H. McClelland, who was a frequent customer of the store and helped out on occasion, The Courant reported.

The saddest thing about this tragedy is that it could have been prevented with a $10 gun lock. ALL weapons and ammunition should be either secured....or ON your person. Nothing in-between.

It seems Stephen is using his own ideas as a template to judge all others.

Why are car dealerships still in business they have people steal cars from them and cars kill people.

We have not heard the full story. Were the guns locked up or just set in a closet?Either way Adam stole them as they were not his.One story earlier this week said he failed to purchase one on his own.I never realized how wise my father was until I had kids of my own.He said locks only keep honest people honest,a thief will get in anyway.Last year my local PD handed out gun locks. The type the goes down the barrel with a steel cable and then locks on the outside. These locks will keep children from useing the gun but any adult with a good pair of wire cutters gets it off quickly. My guns are locked up in a steel safe that even with a cutting tourch you couldn't get in.But then I like to keep whats mine, mine.I am a Vietnam combat Marine and when I say the father of one of the little boys tell about his son,he was controling his tears well but I couldn't.Tears just ran down my face and I cried like I never had before. My heart and my prayers go out to the families and for the children taken way too soon and for the hero teachers and principal who gave their lives trying to stop a mentally unhinged person with a gun.May God bless and keep them forever in his embrace.

Not necessarily, but there's nothing wrong with gun-locks.

Bravo Zulu Joe..we recently convicted a JUDGE for stealling guns form the EVIDENCE LOCKER...and he's been doing it for decades!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you Debbie Sue, most kids today don't respect themselves let alone their parents or anyone else. Parents have to give everything to their kids to keep them quiet, and out of their hair. No supervision, NO DISCIPLINE, and very little love. Guns are not the problem society is the problem ,The I want it now and to hell with anyone who gets in my way attitude society. Why not blame the movie makers, video game makers, or the gang bangers for the violent shootings we have seen. Aren't they just as responsible for the violence. I own a gun, I use my gun for the protection of my family, I practice with it so I know I will hit the object I aim at, and I am prepared mentally for the day that some CRIMINAL tries to injure my family, to protect them any way I can, and that includes using that gun, a knife, or my bare hands. Then I will call the police. Most Police actions are after the fact when you are already dead or injured, it is no longer to serve and to protect. It will always be to investigate, serve and guard. I have rambled long enough.

@ joe schultz ...Somebody with a brain! I Can’t get my mind around why someone would rather die by a thug with a gun then go down with a fighting chance. Seriously how is this debate? As I said before; I Prayed to God asking why I couldn’t be there to lay down cover fire for those angels that perished, even if it meant my life and to hopefully save one of theirs.

I worked in my father's federally-licensed firearms shop since I was a little kid, and I must say this is really appalling. As a gun shop owner, you MUST keep your records 100% perfect. If a single gun goes missing, you should know right away and it's your duty to inform the ATF and local police within 24 hours of noticing the missing gun. To have 12 guns missing and not even know it just proves how irresponsible this business is. Most FFL dealers are much more responsible than this, at least the ones I know. Usually, if there's a single discrepancy in a gun shop's paperwork the ATF will revoke their license right away. What happened here? I don't know Mrs. Lanza, but I do know that most gun dealers would never sell anything to someone with a mentally ill child living with them, especially if they knew that person was going to take their kid to a shooting range and teach them to use firearms. I've always said this, we need better training and education for first time gun buyers, and the education needs to cover storage of firearms, and how to tell if someone you live with (especially your child) might be homicidal or suicidal, or mentally ill in any other way. With rights come responsibilities.

Henry, spoken like a true gun buff,Henry what is the deal with fellow PD south of nj, they must all work for internal affairs or are paranoid of them they bever heard of warn and admonish for traffic infractions>they even give officers of their own agency a traffyc sunnons all the years i was a cop in NYC I never gave anothe cop a summons as long as he did not show me any disrespect, it's only a traffic infraction its's not like your taking a bribe.Henry, you should know better to make a ridiculusstatement like that to me like that! NYPD the best agency in the world all cops and firefighters deserve respect!

I have shown no lack of respect for any public servant...here...or anywhere else. I based my comments concerning you solely on your spelling...which is atrocious and all cops have to have a good grasp of the English language in order to write clear and concise reports! As far as any agency writing fellow officer traffic citations I don't have a clue. I have never done that during my career...although I did write one to a state supreme court judge who practically dared me to after he blatantly ran a stop sign. After he signed the ticket he threatened me...I simply smiled...wished him a safe and good day...and returned to my patrol car.

"A few minutes drive over to Windsor wouldn't be any big deal ..."
Are you kidding me? I don't think that anybody looks at a 120 mile round trip from Newtown to this store as a "few minutes drive." That is a long way to go to buy a weapon that (if all things being equal and on the up and up) could be attained far closer than that.

I'm in my 60's and I doubt you have ever heard me speak. While on that subject...please enlighten me as to the difference between the way an office speaks as opposed to a civilian. (in case you have forgotten...cops are civilians also...not military) The proper term is...citizens!

" I know of several crimes that were committed (one including a murdered police officer) because a clerk at a gun show did not check out the mental status of the buyer. And as it turned out, his name was easy to bring up as such in the computer, but the clerk didn't take the time."
Such nonsense...health/medical records are not available to gunshop owners/licensed gun dealers! The only thing available in a background check is whether or not the person in question is prohibited or not from owning or possessing a firearm...period!!!!! That info comes from court records and the person doing the check is not told why the person is prohibited...only the person being checked can be told why he /she has been rejected and that info can only be obtained by filing the proper paperwork and sending it into the states Dept of Justice!!!! Medical records are never released to anyone except the person they belong to or by that persons direct...signed...permission!!!!!

Bobby said:
" Usually, if there's a single discrepancy in a gun shop's paperwork the ATF will revoke their license right away." That's an outright lie and you know it! If there is one or even several discrepancies in the dealers A&D book the BATFE will sit down with him and try and figure out what has happened. They will give the dealer a certain amount of time to rectify the situation. If it can't be done then they will take administrative action...usually in the form of a civil penalty (fine) or such. It all depends on the circumstances. Revoking a license is the very last thing the BATFE does or wants to do. I have worked with them on both sides...as a police officer and as a licensed dealer...and found them to be easy to work with..friendly...polite...very cordial...and willing to bend over backwards to help when needed. On the whole, they are not the monsters they are made out to be in the media....nor by you Bobby!

EVERY SHOULD REMEMBER THE GUNS WERE ONLY USED AS A TOOL, IF YOU TAKE A CARPENTERS SCREW DRIVER, HE IS GOING TO USE A HAMMER AND NAIL INSTEAD. I do not agree that Dave should be shut down. I know Dave and I know his store, I personally buy guns, ammo and shooting accessories from Riverview Sales. Myself and a large group of my friends shoot, some of us hunt and some of us hunt. That does not make us demented mass murders. Just so you all know Dave had long guns stolen, and the state of connecticut I as a private citizen can sell you one of my long guns and my only requirement is to make sure your over 18 and live in ct, no background check.
All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. { Edmund Burke } Removing guns from the hands of our law abiding citizens and shutting down local gun stores will not stop tragedies from happening, all you will do is put people who at one time could defend them selves and there families from doing so
Joanie January 24, 2013 at 12:26 am
Stephen, it is very much understood by those of us who have been raised with guns. You can't own a gun in Mexico. But the cartels kill people everyday with all kinds of guns. If you disarm the public, you are going to have cartels, gangs, thugs and possibly our own government threatening your safety and freedom. My dad owned guns all our lives, we learned to respect them. He kept them locked up. We only shot with him and we never dreamed of hurting anyone. We would sport shoot, hunt and had an all around feeling of safety. The problem is that people don't take responsibility for their arms. There are signs when someone is not right, you make sure they don't have access to your arms. My grown sons hunt, collect and sport shoot. They also were raised with a healthy respect for guns. Just because you don't like guns, hunting, shooting, etc... doesn't mean you have the right to take it from those who do. A sick person is going to find a way to inflict pain and suffering even if it means fire, homemade bombs, cars, etc... the problem is not the guns, its the lack of responsibility and respect. People should have gun safety classes and be permitted just like if they are getting a drivers license. Awareness is key.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

Norma has been spotted this morning at the intersection of Kenan and Currituck. The red leash isRead More still attached. She was trying to eat a dead squirrel on Currituck. Very skittish, but still in the neighborhood (yay). Please watch for her. My husband and sister-in-law (who first spotted her on Currituck this morning) were unable to get near her. She's in the woods, heading toward Butterfield. Her foster mom is on the scene now. Folks in the neighborhood, please watch for her and call 203-942-4008 if you see her.
Carol Chapman June 19, 2013 at 11:20 am
Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watching her from her car at the moment, armedRead More with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
