Duo Busted in Newtown With 16 Fake $100 Bills

Police arrested the man and woman after they allegedly tried to use one of the counterfeit bills at Big Y.

A man and woman from New York were arrested in Newtown March 27 after they allegedly tried to make a purchase at Big Y with a counterfeit $100 bill.

Police seized a total of 16 counterfeit $100 bills from the two suspects, after taking them into custody at the 6 Queen St. business at 8:30 p.m. 

Police identified the woman as Azucena Z. Ancajima, 31, of Elmhurst, NY, and the man as Ivan Javier Gonzalez, 39, of Elmhurst, NY.

The two were reportedly using the fake bills to make small purchases at stores, and then pocketing the real cash. They had successfully used one at Walgreens in town, police said.

They were both charged with first-degree forgery, a class C felony, and held on a $10,000 bond each.

Newtown Police were assisted in the investigation by Connecticut State Police, Monroe Police, Seymour Police, and U.S. Secret Service.
