Burnese Mountain Dog Swiped From Animal Control

Authorities are trying to identify person who took dog from pound.

Police are investigating the case of a dog that was taken in by animal control officers on the evening of Sunday after it was found on its own and without an owner on Currituck Road.

The brown and white Bernese mountain dog was taken to the pound and somewhere during the overnight or morning hours, it was swiped, officials said. It appears someone might have scaled the fence in removing the dog from the locked facility without authorization, officials said.

Animal Control Officer Carolee Mason said authorities believe it may have been the owner who took the dog from the pound. She said they want to make sure the dog, which was well-behaved and well-groomed, is OK.

The dog was taken in by Animal Control at around 6 p.m., Sunday, and gone by the time staff returned to the facility at 8:30 a.m., Monday, officials said.

Anyone with information on the dog is asked to contact police at 203-426-5841 or Animal Control at 203-426-6900.
