Burlington, CT Man Charged in Shooting of Bear

Man shoots bear on his property. Should the man have been charged?

At approximately 7:30 a.m., this morning (May 15), officers from D.E.E.P.’s Environmental Conservation Police  responded to 4 Cobblestone Road in Burlington to investigate the report of a possible shooting of a Black Bear.

The resident from that address contacted the Connecticut State Police reporting that they heard two gunshots, and then saw a black bear come into their yard and lay down.

Upon arrival, EnCon officers found that the black bear, a male weighing approximately 460 pounds, was dead and had been shot.  The investigation lead to the arrest of Cory J Maitz,  42, of 6 Cobblestone Road,  Burlington, on charges of Illegally Killing a Black Bear, a misdemeanor, and Criminal Possession of a Pistol, a Class D felony.

Maitz allegedly shot the Black Bear with a pistol after it he had seen it enter his garage then go into his back yard.   The bear and firearm were seized as evidence and are being held pending court action. Maitz was released on a promise to appear at Bristol Superior Court on June 04, 2012.

Bears should be allowed to kill someone in their garage before they can be shot.

However; partial birth abortions of down syndrome babies (with no risk to mothers heath) are legal and should be paid for by our tax dollars. Unbelievable!!

Folks, I hunt black bears. They are usually very shy, but if there's one in your garage, you shoot him. A black bear can kill you with one swat of his six inch claws. Now.. as for the illegal gun charge, definitely illegal. Shooting a bear in your garage is self defense.

GREAT REPLY Lilly - absurd how this country values the life of bears, fish, owls.... but not children. As for the bear - if it is continually coming into yards and homes - it will only become more aggressive - they have been known to break into homes. Once this behavior is learned the only option for stopping it is to put the bear in a zoo or kill it. If the gun was illegal then he has a problem but shooting the bear, really? Anyone or anything that breaks into my garage is fair game!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I read the article correctly, it seems to me that the bear was shot in the guy's back yard, not in the garage. I normally keep my garage door shut, to keep wildlife out, but that's just me. It doesn't sound like the bear was threatening anyone's life at all. It had apparently gone in the garage, with no report of having done any damage, then left the garage and went into the backyard when this guy decided to kill it. Rather than shooting and killing it, wouldn't it be more reasonable to fire a shot to scare it away or to call animal control? Instead, this idiot decided to use an unlawful weapon and kill the thing, thus getting himself arrested. There's something to Darwinism.

Trick question: is it legal to abort a bear?
