In Memoriam: George D.W. Ferris, Sr., 101

George DeWitt Wight Ferris, Sr., age 101, of Danbury, CT died Friday, November 8, 2013 at Danbury Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Phebe (Kellogg) Ferris. George was greatly admired for his simple, dependable nature and love for his family. He was an avid genealogist and was always ready to share old-time quotes.

George was born in Newtown, CT, July 2, 1912, son of the late Charles D. and Ophelia (Thornhill) Ferris, and was the last of the Ferris family to be home-birthed at the family homestead on Route 302. George and his late wife moved to Danbury in 1945 and he worked at the former Smith Pharmacy and Culhane Pharmacy in Danbury. He worked at English Drug in Bethel for 33 years then worked part time at the Georgetown Pharmacy until his retirement in 1986. He prided himself that he didn’t miss more than 3 or 4 days of work and that he was not late more than 4 or 5 times, even during blizzards.

George is survived by his 2 sons: George D. W. Ferris, II and his wife Elizabeth Marsan-Ferris of Newtown, CT, Robert K. Ferris, MD and his wife Kathryn Gates-Ferris of Bogota, NJ; six grandchildren: Elizabeth A. Ferris, George D. W. Ferris, III, Alexandra B.
