Feeding the Beast

I'm not denying the power of Nature but perhaps we can all "power down" a bit in the ways we (over)react to it.

She's got us all in a tailspin and yet many might forget her name after she has her way with us. As of this posting she hasn't fully introduced herself to Connecticut yet we all feel we know her. Why? Irene has captivated the attention of the East Coast as well she should.

However, with the incessant media coverage and town criers it is apparently the only news. I get it. I know I need to buy some batteries, candles and have some less than appetizing tidbits in the cabinet. Does anyone remember this past winter's snowstorms??? I respect Nature; I respect good reporting and I am saddened for any families who suffer Irene's wrath. What I don't respect is the constant bombardment of the never-ending hurricane story.

Why can't we simply get needed updates and try to put our thoughts elsewhere for even an hour? Maybe the idea of mandatory house confinement could have a silver lining. What's so bad about forcing us to slow down and connect with a bit of eye contact? No computers, video games or TV. Perhaps families could get innovative and do something that doesn't involve a cord.

One last thing...I overheard a woman today say "I just bought the charcoal!" as if she was throwing an end of summer cookout. That doesn't even make sense. Honestly, is her family going to barbeque on a charcoal grill in a hurricane? Or this gem...How can you cook Spaghetti-O's (a shopper's carriage was loaded!) without electricity?

Yes, there's propane if you've got it. Oh yeah, and there's always charcoal.
