Can We Talk?

I probably couldn't live without my Blackberry for 24 hours and that's okay. My concern is when communication devices are used as a tool to detach us from one another.

I do not like to be ignored — nobody does. I could understand if it was the 1960's and I wanted to avoid the Avon lady. Fine, she rings the bell, I hide behind the drapes. Phew! She moves on to the next ranch house and I've dodged a pink bullet.

The sad truth is that with today's technology it is often harder to reach someone. I'm not even talking about a tete-a-tete conversation. Talking by cable, satellite, or 2 tin cans is just fine. Sometimes I need to speak to a certain person, not leave a detailed voicemail.

No, a text will not do, thank you very much. Email? Just gets lost in the shuffle. We think we are all connected now with our Twitter, Facebook, etc. but we have never been more dis-connected. People screen their calls, emails, and texts. Then, you may hear back or not, depending on where you fall in that person's pecking order (contact list).

Remember when we automatically answered our ringing land line and had no idea who was calling? I would love that (okay, maybe not love)! We can even be ignored with "call waiting." How ironic is that? That doesn't even make sense!

"Ignore" with it's Latin "ignorare" means "to not know" or "disregard". I don't recall IGNORANCE as one of the deadly sins but it's nothing to be proud of, right?

Some folks would just prefer not to know something. But, here's the ugly truth...To ignore is only to delay. Ask anyone who filed their taxes late, got a tragic biopsy or lost their house to foreclosure. Enough writing; time to talk.
